If you want to read a good book or books about EMP's this a good start and a good 3 Book series.
The other two books in this series are One Year After and The Final Day.
I enjoyed reading them and learned some things at the same time.
The least of which is how to think about the possibility of this event happening.
The U.S. is not prepared for an event like this and the countries leadership know about it and have done nothing.

I was thinking,if we got hit by a mega flare,something even bigger than the carrington event-are all our tech manufacturers certain that every lithium battery on the planet will not suddenly combust?

Imagine the mayhem if suddenly every phone tablet etc went up in smoke as the waves of charged plasma bathes the atmosphere.

That wired article also talks about satellites getting fried and potentially smashing into others.

Something our ancestors may have marvelled at as a great wonder in the skies in the shape of auroras could now cause serious damge to the modern world.
Thats a strange turn of events.

What will be amazing is what we all do, if the power is wiped out, being all pretty much dumb and helpless, without phones. Kids today can't even write their own names..good luck!!

Which shows just how fleeting modern society is. I believe things will come crashing down fairly soon, either by something like this or one of our own machinations.

Then again people have been saying that for thousands of years now so take it with a grain of salt.

Nothing for once I wish there would be a bit of substance to doom porn .....

Amount of damage and disruption caused by solar flare is dependent on several things

1) Size of flare X class being the worst

2) Direction - is the Coronal Mass ejection aimed at earth or in different direction where the charged particles directly
impact the earth

3) Polarity of the magnetic field - if field direction is southward will connect the poles of the earth magnetic field allowing currents to flow along the field lines

First, it was plenty of redundancy in the system then it was just in time. At present, it will take a while. Next, it ain't coming. Fix it yourself.
