Sure it's nothing and I agree it's likely nothing but show that they can project force while engaged with still engaged with Ukraine. Besides how well Ukraine has gone I would imagine all of Russia's military is being evaluated and tested. Or a 2% chance it's naval support for China's invasion of Taiwan

Japan's Defense Ministry says five Russian Navy vessels were spotted in the Pacific Ocean off the northern prefecture of Hokkaido on Thursday. It says the ships' activities are likely part of a massive naval exercise by Russia.

The ministry said on Friday that a Maritime Self-Defense Force vessel confirmed that the Russian ships, including a destroyer and a frigate, were about 170 kilometers southeast of the Nemuro Peninsula in eastern Hokkaido.

Earlier, Russia's Defense Ministry said a massive drill in the Pacific, involving over 40 vessels and about 20 aircraft, was scheduled for last Friday or later.

In relation to the drill, Russia has reportedly issued navigation warnings over possible missile firings and other activities in waters near the Kuril Islands, as well as waters off Japan's Sanriku region that include part of the country's exclusive economic zone.

Japan's Defense Minister Kishi Nobuo told reporters on Friday that the drill may be aimed at showing that Russia can conduct military activities in the Far East while invading Ukraine.

Kishi said his ministry will continue gathering intelligence and monitoring the Russian move with serious concern.

Hopefully they're all equipped with the most modern Garmin GPS's duct taped to the control panel.

It may have something to do with the long-standing dispute over the Kuril Islands.

Russian Navy drills involving over 40 vessels begin in Pacific Ocean – ministry

JUNE 3, 07:00

Russian Pacific Fleet’s exercises involving over 40 warships and support vessels, as well as 20 planes and helicopters, have begun in the Pacific Ocean, the Russian Defense Ministry said on Friday.

"In the course of practical training, task groups together with naval aviation will detect the notional enemy’s submarines, train air defense of tactical groups of ships, perform combat and training exercises involving surface and aerial targets and practice organizational issues related to material and technical support of seaborne forces," the ministry said.

The Marshal Krylov missile range instrumentation ship and the Marshal Shaposhnikov frigate are currently in the exercise zone, together with large anti-submarine ships and corvettes, small anti-submarine ships, minesweepers, missile boats and auxiliary vessels.

The exercise is being conducted between June 3 and 10, in accordance with the Pacific Fleet’s 2022 training schedule.

and then there is this...

In just a little over a week after Russia asked Turkey/Erdogan not to proceed. It looks as if Erdogan is thumbing his nose at Russia just a little bit.

www.aljazeera.com...

Russia urged Turkey not to launch an offensive in northern Syria after President Recep Tayyip Erdogan renewed threats of a military campaign targeting Kurdish “terrorists”.

“We hope that Ankara will refrain from actions that could lead to a dangerous deterioration of the already difficult situation in Syria,” Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said in a statement on Thursday.

Azaz, Syria – Turkish-backed Syrian opposition forces have said their forces are ready for battle, and expect a new Turkish military operation in Syria to start soon.

Units of the Syrian National Army (SNA) paraded on Thursday through the streets of Azaz, a town in northern Aleppo province, in an effort to show their preparedness for the operation that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has threatened in recent weeks against the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

the key word here would be "earlier" as in before today and presumably within your 3rd-10th window.

Just hoping for a reason to push that big shiny red button.

Todays geopolitical situation is utterly depressing at best.
If you look back through history you see can how what we are witnessing is what happens after every plague-the big players get involved in power/land grabs, war ensues.
This time around we have an emboldened Russia and China Vs a dying western world fighting for dominance of the future.

And today,we have been "gifted" with some seriously incompetent western leaders who in many ways seem to be doing the work of our enemies for them in terms of societal damage.

Its getting hard to remain positive about the future when our own "leaders" vision of the future looks like a dystopian technological prison-never mind what a Sino/Rus dominant future would look like.

Good luck everyone,I think we are going to need it.

The US too. The Kurds have been far better allies I recent years than Turkey.

Having Turkey in NATO is a liability IMO. They seem to have more of a relationship with Russia at the moment than the west anyways.

The only reason we want Turkey in NATO is because of the Bosporus. Otherwise it's a theocratic jerkwater with no value.

Yea, I remember we put pressure on them to dictate traffic through that regarding the Ukrainian conflict.

They just go off the reservation a lot. Like the time they shot down a Russian jet who flew through a sliver of their airspace during the Syrian conflict. The last part makes it odd to me that the ruskies are so open to relations with them only a short time after with little to no ramifications. But, many Russians holiday there, and I'm sure the two have quite a bit of trade.
