Missed calls -SN2022- non-writer

For the past 15 years, just before midnight on May 5th, my phone beeps once and a message appears on the screen saying: 'missed call from Dave'.
Every year I wait for it, then hasten to check the memory box I keep in my drawer to see if his phone is still in there. The battery died days after the funeral.
Today I heard that beep again, but the message read: 'new voicemail from Dave'. It took me hours to gather the courage to listen to it. I immediately recognized his familiar voice, whispering : "Nothing is what it seems."

I find the once-a-year message to be a bit cruel... Dave only being "allowed" to keep this minimal contact from the other side, and your protagonist unable to reply.

Yes, that makes sense and is a touching thought.

I don't remember your thread, but that this is based on a true story makes it even more compelling.

It was years ago! It was only about the first text message, and it happened once, no voicemail though

This is a good story too. Very creepy, especially since it's based on a real story.

Nothing is as it seems. A most cryptic message.

No lost words, no filler words, just a quick succinct get to the message story. Balanced and perfectly timed.
