I heard this on the news today and my heart skipped a beat. I'd hoped that it was an April fools joke, but...

Here is a quick article on the new (formal) alliance. All I can say is that we've been asking for it. China's been threatening to top the global economy for years now. Russia just may be the partner China needs to do it.

I'm reminded of this SciFi ad campaign leading up to Y2K. They would send us messages from the year 3000. The most memorable was "learn to speak Chinese... fluently.

Heh. But in all seriousness, this makes me very nervous. I'm wondering what kind of political world my children are going to grow up in. I don't know why, but the idea of possibly moving to a small town in Ireland sounds really appealing.

I can't find a more recent article right now (because I need to get to bed) but in the story I heard, they were running a mock-campaign against Thailand. Might a military confrontation result in this alliance. I'll post a new article when I get up tomorrow, but in the mean time I pose the following questions.

How does Japan feel about this. North Korea? Mongolia (they're in the middle of this whole thing no pun intended), Kazakhstan? Eastern Europe? The rest of Europe? What about the middle east, any chance of them taking sides with a country of infidels? How do you feel?

The world is changing... I'm afraid... but I'm told that people often fear the unknown. No one likes irregularity. A few years ago, in my more rebellious days I'd have said "good for them, global economic competition", but something tells me that America won't let go of it's dominant status very easily.

Maybe I'm blowing this a little out of proportion, but I see a lot of possibilities for these two allies (Soviet Union II?), some of the worst case scenarios involve me fighting to protect our way of life (which I would do for the sake of my family, not for the sake of patriotism). It angers me that America has so many policies of "let's see how many other countries we can screw over to gain power or to make money". Eventually these deeds will come back to us, and instead of receiving support from the rest of the world, we'll receive a "you earned it" attitude.

Anyway, I know I'm being a bit paranoid, but I'd like your thoughts and reactions.

I don't know how reliable the source is. Fact remains that other news sources suggests that Russia is leaning towards China (e.g. their joint military exercise). This itself is surprising. I thought Russia being surrounded by two geopolitical spheres (the EU and China) would lean towards the EU.

Somewhere in time it's clear that Russia must choose a side. No matter how reliable the India daily source is, given other sources it seems that Russia is currently leaning towards China.

Edit:
By the way, the India Daily News goes further by suggesting that Russia and China will invite Brazil and India for an alliance a la NATO in the future. LOL I highly doubt this, but if it's true they will have a mighty hell of an Alliance (almost half the world's population and all the future economic power houses).

While theoretically this would make for an extremely powerful alliance, I don't think there is one in the world that can match the might of the US and Europe. They may have us outnumbered, but they are no match when it comes to our technology. I'm no military expert, but just take a look at our aircraft carriers, subs, and planes compared to their's. Do they even have aircraft carriers???

I don't want to spin this off into another US vs. China/Russia thread, lord knows there have been a hundred here already. I think that with the way China's economy is expanding they are not foolish enough to take on a country such as the US which through our consumers provides them with a large chunk of their badly needed income. The only bone of contention that I can see causing a problem between us and China, besides Taiwan, is China's increasing thirst for oil. There's only so much of this stuff left and China is aquiring more and more of it and is even willing to pay top dollar. If push comes to shove, and we're not able to get enough oil at a reasonable price due to China sucking it all up, we could butt heads over this. Even though in the end I feel we'd come out on top (we could never successfuly invade and occupy China I feel), God help us all if this ever happens.

Ok, I'll see if I can find a better source. If I can't, then I'll retract my original post and see if I can get a mod or someone to delete it. Bulgaria, I'm sorry that I posted something that you've already started a thread on, I was actually excited because I heard on KNX (mainstream radio news) that China and Russia were running a mock campaign against Taiwan, not Thailand. I've managed to make an error there in my fatigued and doped up (I'm on pain killers due to a shoulder injury) stupor. I'll get back to this thread momentarily.

Edit. Rasputin, should I just try to get rid of the thread, or would the campaign against Taiwan be worthy information if true?

Servo,

I don't want to speak for the others, but I believe it's no problem you have posted this.

While it's still to remain to see whether the India Daily is a reliable source (heck what do we know know about Indian newspapers?) some of the things mentioned within the article is reliable as it has been mentioned by other news sources.

Anyway, the geopolitical moves that Russia and China is making is very important and interesting to follow.

By the way, I wish you the best with your shoulders.

I thought it was Bush's Job to steal other people's oil companies

Ok, while I can google it and find a million pages on the BRIC, I can't seem to find any sources on this mock campaign against Taiwan. I consider that odd because I heard it on the mainstream news and thought I would share it with all of you. Perhaps I was hallucinating? I'm sorry and I'll try to get the thread deleted.
If anyone else has heard this story and would like to help me prove to myself that I'm not crazy, please reply before I attempt to kill this thread.

I've committed the cardinal sin of not verifying my sources. I'm no better than Dan Rather :-(

I believe what you are looking for is Commonwealth-2005, the joint military exercise between China and Russia. If you google Commonwealth-2005 you will find a lot of hits, and supposedly it will mock an invasion of Taiwan (according to some).

Thank you. You've saved me some embarrassment. I heard it on the news and it made me want to post it here... seemed like a good idea at the time... but then again I'm also married.

FredT, being a senior ATSer obviously knows what he's talking about more than I do. More credit to his name, he has a better thread concerning the opinions and politics behind China invading Taiwan (plus he is more often sober... I think). Post additional comments Here
Thanks,

I saw this coming way back, atm Russia & China vs US and Europe doesn't seem like much, in the future mark my words Russia and China will be a force to be reckoned with.

Yes. But their goverments are smart. Unless they have a super top secret plan on their hands, a military confrontation would most likely result in a lot of dead people and those still living would be hating China and Russia... openly and agressively. We can always hope for MAD and then no one would have to deal with it. Heh.
