Music today.. What are you listening ?

My interest in music is almost non-existent now. I listen to what my co-workers listen to and thats the limit of my interest. I don't think I will ever purchase another album again and I deleted my music collection some months ago. Thats that. Very good decision that I wont ever regret.

I like both versions, but this one seems a mostly hot/cold issue. Most people either really like one or the other. I don't have the old Simon and Garfunkel one, but I grew up listening to it.

On another side of the musical spectrum...

Don't know why but this morning Ive been listening to Physical Graffiti, probably 20 years since I listened to the whole album. I used to listen to music all the time on Sunday morning, especially after I got a new album. I need to start doing this again...

My dad taught me to play the spoons so when I found the spoon lady on You tube several years ago I saw several of videos with her in them.

My dad had a couple pair of rosewood ''bones'' he called them, nicely carved wood in the shape of rib bones. He told me that they came from people picking up ribs and playing them first and then sticks and then spoons. It's always been interesting to me the things that people can turn into musical instruments, that washboard in Tuba Skinny for instance. Those ''bones'' were good for percussion in Celtic music like reels and jigs.

This is an amazing topic I love to ruminate upon. The scope and breath of music we have available to us today. Generally speaking, a hundred years ago the only music 99% of people would ever know was the music performed by local musicians playing music that was handed down from previous generations. Even the simplest of radios was only a decade or so old.

Now we have access to nearly every form, style, whatever of music at our beck and call. From around the world and over centuries of time. And from that, the morphing of one from and into another, not to mention the scope of new technology that gives us new sounds every day.

I don't know the mechanics of how this affects the nature of human consciousness but no one can tell me that it doesn't.

Seriously Deep is seriously taking himself too seriously. The joke was not the song itself, but the title. You mentioned that you like no music and don't listen to any. So I gave you the title "The Sound of Silence". It wasn't about the song, but the title only. You know, in case in your being offended, you missed the joke.

I know it's gotten pretty formulaic. You have to really look hard to find stuff that doesn't all sound the same. There is less and less modern stuff making my list all the time. I can't tell if that's because I'm getting older or because I find stuff I like and then there just isn't anything that sounds different enough to it to distinguish. Why add in 20 songs that all sounds the same?

Music has been a massive part of my life.
Not a day goes by when I don't listen to some music, some days more than others.

I have a broad and eclectic taste in music and have more vinyl, CD's, playlists etc than I care to sort and itemise.

I've seen literally hundreds of bands/artists live....ranging from the biggest names in music to some of the most obscure acts one could imagine.
And back in the day I did more than my fair share of going to raves etc and have DJ'd at a few rally's and events.

As far as I can tell there has always been people trying to sanitise and regulate music....but they always fail. As soon as corporations take control something new emerges somewhere.

As I have most of my CD's ripped to my laptops I tend to either select a playlist or usually put it on shuffle and sit back and listen.

However, recently I've been playing a bit of these:

Yep, formulaic means easily reproducible. Couple this with what we should all know by now to be the strong tendency for humans to follow the tribe and we end up with ''popular culture'', ''pop music''.

Early radio could only program limited amounts of music so they played music for the people of their areas. There were only a few stations in any one area so they competed with each other to sell commercials. The experts would take polls and find the most popular musics and all the stations would play them. Other, less commercially vibrant would not be played.

The late 60s improved on this with the advent of FM radio. More stations and less regulations and a lot less cost opened up a vaster amount of music that could be played broadening the scope for those who wished to explore. Most though hung with what that popular music scene was producing. Big money made sure it stayed in the forefront of cultural programming. And we see where we are now. .
