Maybe my terminology is incorrect, but from what I
have read, the founder of the Mormons was declared a freemason without having went through the normal rites of initiation.

To any Masons, I ask first, is this true?

And secondly what exactly does that mean?

Not sure about Smith, but this is a real thing.

Shaq was made a mason on sight.
freemasonsfordummies.blogspot.com...

It means the person is considered to be a 3rd degree master mason, without any initiation ritual. A grandmaster has the ability to do this. (as far as I know)

Correct.

I got the same treatment for the Scottish Rite from the SGC.

Thanks,. I can't remember where I read that about Joseph Smith, probably wikipedia. But i did not know that this happened to Shaq, nor did I know he was a Mason.

I want to say it happened in Boston but I could be wrong on that. Not every Grand Lodge has this provision on making a Mason on sight, but I know that we have that in New Jersey.
