Lavrov said some stuff in an interview yesterday with an Italian news channel that hasn't gone down well in Israel , his remarks have been branded "unforgivable" by Israel's foreign minister and the Russian ambassador has been summoned for "clarification" and to apologise for Lavrov's remarks.

Mr Lavrov made the remarks in an interview with the Italian news channel Zona Bianca on Sunday, days after Israel marked Holocaust Remembrance Day, one of the most solemn occasions in the Israeli calendar.

When asked how Russia can claim that it is fighting to "de-Nazify" Ukraine when President Volodymyr Zelensky is himself Jewish, Mr Lavrov said: "So what if Zelensky is Jewish."

"The fact does not negate the Nazi elements in Ukraine. I believe that Hitler also had Jewish blood," adding that "some of the worst anti-Semites are Jews."

Israel's foreign minister reacted furiously to Mr Lavrov's statement, accusing him of anti-Semitism.

Selenskyj did not substantiate his statements or indicate who might have used the term.

According to Reuters reports, Russian President Vladimir Putin has used a term meaning "final decision/final solution" once in the past 30 days, but did not mean the genocide of Jews described by "final solution."

The Holocaust memorial Yad Vashem criticized Selenskyj's allusion to the "final solution." Such irresponsible remarks trivialized the historical facts of the Holocaust, it said. "The war is terrible, but comparing it to the horrors of the Holocaust and the Final Solution is outrageous," wrote Israeli Communications Minister Yoaz Hendel.

And please don´t let me start about that Bandera-Asow-Melnyk "ambassador" here in Germany. I used to think Lavrov was one of the more rational Russian politicians-or if not rational,at least reasonably proffesional when dealing with geopolitical issues.
Evidently I have been proved wrong more than once during the Ukraine invasion.

He really seems to have lost the plot latley-does he crave more suspicious fires and cyber attacks within Russia?

Without resorting to one of many books on the subject I'm sure the rumour was that one of Hitler's Great-Grandmothers was quarter Jewish or something like that.
Once over I would have been able to recall the exact details, advancing years I'm afraid.

One of Hitler's oldest and closest friends Emil Maurice partook in the Beer Hall Putsch and was a chauffeur and bodyguard of Hitler's and was also a Jew.
Himmler tried to 'get rid' of him but Hitler made Maurice and his family 'Honorary Aryans' and he went on to serve in the Luftwaffe.
If I remember correctly he survived the war.

I only mention this in order to point out that there were a very, very small number of Jews in the Nazi Party.

He said there were many such battalions and “they are what they are.” I would like to emphasise that this phrase – “they are what they are” – was cut out by the journalist and it was not included in the interview that was aired. This means the journalist understands what this person says and thinks. He thinks about how the neo-Nazis can be used to fight Russia.

If Israel could disprove the statements, they wouldn't be so upset. I think Israel is still sore that Russia prevented Israel's regime change in Syria.

Maybe this could be a good thing, though. Maybe Israel can go into Ukraine and fight the Russians so NATO won't have to. They are pretty good at air strikes on unarmed Palestinians, let's see how they do against someone who can fight back.

Meanwhile, the US and NATO countries can focus on improving the lives of their own citizens, rather than sacrificing for some other country.

The belief that Hitler had Jewish ancestry has never been proven or even suspected. The rumour developed because Hitler's paternal grandfather was unknown, so speculation as to his identity was rife. And how ironic would it be if the man who hated Jews was himself partly Jewish? This ironic 'fact' suggests to me that it probably isn't true.

Lavrov believes it because it supports his other belief that Ukraine is run by Nazis. Given the present Russian administration's cavalier attitude to truth, this doesn't surprise me.

Vladimir Putin has called Israeli PM Naftali Bennett and apologised for the remarks made by Sergei Lavrov according to a statement from the office of the PM.

In Thursday's statement, Mr Bennett's office said that he had accepted Mr Putin's apology and "thanked him for clarifying his attitude towards the Jewish people and the memory of the Holocaust".

Russia said the two discussed the Holocaust, but did not say Mr Putin apologised.
