I always thought that was dumb. I say if I know I'm going to die in the next few mins let everyone do whatever they feel like.

Very true. ukraine and the surrounding waters are absolutely a testing ground for weapon systems right now.

In a war no battle ship is better off destroyed.

Old and senile?

Sick and desperate?

Hiding the good weapons till he is sure he has no choice?

Not sure but lets hope they made it off as it would be a hell of a way to go.

Some speculation only 53 made it out and others suggest most of the 500 crew was evacuated to other ships.

Edit: found this.

What if putin just wanted a non-genicidy looking way to kill his own people?
So he's making the ukrainian military do it.

Russia has finally admitted ship went the way of a barrier reef and sunk. Still claims explosion from ammo.

Well they may be not be lying, after the missiles slammed into her the magazines could have blown.

Yeah but people are saying that the entire military is weak and old including the nukes.

I'm saying what if the nukes are the only thing that they did keep up?

We don't want to find out either way, so we aren't sending troops to help defend Ukraine.

But that in itself is very strange. So hard to believe that the russian military is this weak. What games are really being played?

somebody (maybe me) suggested Putin is holding the good stuff to the East in case China gets ambitious.

being forced out of Ukraine would be humiliating but no real strategic harm done, esp if they can keep some of those eastern provinces in the Donbas-Crimea area.

I suppose after this war someone will send in a team to find the wreck and determine whether missile hit or not. or the Russians might block it off and try to salvage themselves.

I have a vague memory of a Japanese ship in WWII sinking from internal fire (Mutsu?).

This was (by far) russia's best ship.

Assuming that I was incorrect concerning the strategic outcome:

Would Putin permit the Russian Navy to scale back their operations in the Black Sea?
My answer to that question is no.But during the Falklands War, HMS Conqueror sinking ARA General Belgrano unnerved the Argentinian Naval Commanders, they didn't wish to lose anymore vessels over barren outposts. So the Argentinian Navy sat out the remainder of the war.

I don't believe the Russian story on this one. What are the odds a fire would sink a battleship, and in the middle of a war? The ukies got some serious firepower from us or the U.K. Can you imagine the Hell to pay if a U.S. flagship was sunk by missiles? I see this as a major escalation..

Silly russians put 16 giant liquid fueled missile launchers along the outside of the ship, and lots of spare missiles inside it, along with a lot of torpedoes.

Doesn't take much to sink a ship build like that, except the ability to hit it.

I don't know. He did break out one hypersonic missile, I think now the dangerous part is he has had heavy losses and now will fight hard to consolidate gains before he ever even thinks about negotiations. Donetsk and Luhansk Regions will either be Russian or he will shell and bomb it into a debris-filled mud pit.

Russians are big on the scorched earth policy.

Just look at Stalingrad during WWII.
