I totally agree... I’m shocked at how badly they’ve preformed in conventual warfare.

Problem is though, they have nukes and lots of them... and we have no way of knowing how prepared they are to use them.

Unlike conventional weapons (and that includes troops), quantity does not equal advantage; at least beyond a certain point, which both sides in this conflict have surpassed long ago.

With nuclear weapons, it is not how many you have, but how effectively you can deploy them, and whether you can survive the retaliation you will have to endure well enough to make their deployment worthwhile.

I think we have seen the that Russia is ill-prepared and ill-equipped to survive the retaliation it would surely have to endure were it to deploy any part of its nuclear arsenal: even in retaliation against an action by Ukraine on Russian soil.

And even though Putin might not acknowledge, or even consider this fact, his military commanders most certainly do.

They have to consider their performance in Ukraine to have that lesson driven painfully home.

I don’t think it is a matter of incompetence.

They were undertrained and their leaders were over confident.

Remember. Many of the first wave that Russia sent were conscripts with very little training who thought they were only there to receive more training. Not invade a country.

"Under-trained" and "overconfident" are two solid definitions of incompetence.

Incompetence exemplify in both the lower and upper ranks does not speak well to the overall competence of the military as a whole, nor of the political command directing it.

Putin has, whether he realizes it or not, given the west invaluable insight into the weaknesses and vulnerabilities of the Russian military.

If anyone other that Putin himself had exposed so much to the West, Putin would have had them executed for high treason.

Putin can point his nuclear pistol at our heads and threaten nuclear war. He already has. That's another reason why he's a loathsome piece of human garbage. But we won't be threatened. He can go to Hell. I'm not afraid of a dictator, and neither should you be.

I'm not afraid of Putin but I sure worry about the nukes. even one successful one can give you a real bad day.

anyone remember all the theories about Putin sending the scrubs into Ukraine and keeping the *good* troops in country (possibly to keep Beijing from getting frisky)? Does Putin have thousands of 'good' troops sitting in country?

"He was led to believe that the Ukrainians would fold immediately," said Saideman, adding he suspects no one dared tell him Russian forces wouldn't prevail. "It's very difficult for authoritarian regimes to assess themselves because there's a culture of lying and a lack of accountability because there are serious consequences to disappointing Putin."

The danger being what will Putin do when his back is against the wall? You'd think someone on the inside would take care of him before he pressed any "buttons".
Dictators don't step down. They generally die in culverts or bunkers. They also have a history of shooting themselves, but that's wishful thinking..

Unless you’re there on the front line we don’t know what’s happening. We won’t know even a partial truth until it’s said and done with. Propaganda is on overdrive from both sides. Just depends on what flavor kool-aid you wanna drink.

As I said before. There's so many people of all political angles reporting this from the ground that it's pretty much block chained.
I have absolutely no doubt about what's going on. But that's me.
At this point if you don't believe what's happening around you then you will never believe what's happening around you.
Head in the sand stuff. No offence meant.
Hard to debate with folks like that.

Is anyone else surprised at how inept Putins army is?
We all know that those convoys would be easy pickings if NATO decided to A-10 their sorry asses back to the motherland.
I'm shocked.

Armies are very fragile things. You can have a top army today and in 5 years it is total crap. I have said before that now is not the best time to go up against the US that has been in real world combat for 20+ years. Not just talking the capabilities of the troops, but also the equipment. Just look at the huge advances the US has done in the last 20 years that would not have taken place if we were not at war. When I look at every piece of equipment the Russians are using it looks like stuff out of the 60s or 70s...

Putin had too many assumptions that were all incorrect. He assumed his army was good, he assumed the people of Ukraine would welcome him with open arms, he assume this all would be a week at best cake walk...all wrong.

He didn't really know just how lethal this 2010+ equipment the US is pumping into there actually is. He is firing everyone that is even remotely involved as he now sees it is basically futile for him to think about taking all of Ukraine. It will only get worst for him too.... He should move out take the two small areas he been fighting his proxy war in to the east and call it a day, but even if he just does that he is still F'ed.

You don't need to be on the front lines to see the Russians failed to take Kyiv, the burned out hulks of their tanks tells that story clearly enough.

I heard the US is providing them with SwitchBlade drones. That's some crazy-ass gear right there..Cutting edge.

In March 2022, it was reported that the US was considering providing Switchblade drones to the Ukrainian armed forces following the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.[1] On 16 March, the White House announced that "100 Tactical Unmanned Aerial Systems" would be provided to Ukraine as part of a $800 million military aid package.[26] Each of these systems constitutes "a complete package of ground launch and control systems, and potentially multiple drones."[27] According to one journalist, citing a US military source, each of these systems carries ten Switchblade drones, making for a total of 1,000.[28] The package includes both anti-personnel Switchblade 300s and anti-armor Switchblade 600s.[29]

en.wikipedia.org...

The larger Switchblade 600 loitering munition weighs 50 lb (23 kg), is man-portable and can be set up in 10 minutes. It is designed to fly out to 40 km (25 mi) in 20 minutes, then loiter for another 20 minutes (giving it an 80 km (50 mi) total range). It attacks at a 115 mph (185 km/h) dash speed, carrying a Javelin anti-armor warhead[35] designed to neutralize armored vehicles.

That much is true.

The same thing happened, to a lesser or greater extent (depending upon who you talk to), after Vietnam to the US military.

Weaknesses were exposed. Those weaknesses were, for the most part, fixed over the ensuing years--resulting in a military that was much improved.

...

It occurs to me that this might be necessary again, given the stupidity/incompetence of senior military that's been evidenced in the past year or so...

Anyhow...back to Russia.

It's been said that amateurs discuss tactics, and professionals discuss logistics. I think we've seen what the Soviets, oops Russians, in the their military are...

If you can't give your soldiers enough beans or bullets, you're going to have problems. Lots and lots of problems--even before you start thinking about your prospective enemy.

Also you:

The Russians have exposed themselves as being a paper tiger here. They're in over their heads. In UKRAINE.

If you dont know the plans, goals or strategies, making such claims is silly.

20k dead russians isnt a good plan by any stretch to non psycopaths. How many is to a pyschopath?

The 300s can go through a window and kill everyone in a room, weights like 15 pounds and can fly 20 mins looking for people. The 600 can take out armored vehicles, and they can talk with each other, so if one sees 5 vehicles it can relay that to others flying and they all can swarm in. It can fly like 40 mins.

No place to hide if you are 100k strong personnel trying to move through Ukraine.

Not to mentioned the accuracy of just smaller drones directing fire. It just takes one shot to figure out where the second one is going.

I don't think the Russian military are incompetent but their leadership did underestimate the level of resistance the Ukrainian military and the people of Ukraine would put up , they also misjudged the reaction of the International community to the attack on a Sovereign country.

Mistakes were made.

If all he wanted to do was take the smaller east section where he has been fighting his proxy war in then he would have stopped on week 1. Since he is doing the typical Russian "scorched earth" tactic it is safe to say he has bigger plans for Ukraine. If he does not take it all then he has gain nothing, since the reason to take it all is to establish a direct line to EU with energy without the pesky Ukrainians in the way.

A regime change would be to put in a Russian puppet in power and that really is not going to work if he can't devastate and occupy the country. He couldn't even take the smaller east sections these last 6+ years.

Well Although you or I might not know the intricacies of Putins plan maybe we should face the facts.

Russia invading the Ukraine with more than 140,000 soldiers, tanks, and trucks is the truth on the ground. So let's go out on a limb here and say that Putins plan was to invade Ukraine.
Hope that works for you.
