ATS. Tracking you above and beyond.

The OP was poorly worded. I'll try again.

I have noticed, When you log in where it says, "There have been (x) new topics created, Since you were last on."

Seems to carry over from unlogged in("anonymous") sessions . After viewing the new topics (while not logged in) I cleared my browser history. Everything. I also know that my IP address has changed from session to session.

However - at 2pm not logged in I saw 5 new topics(my count). I then left clearing all the history again. Hours later I have come back and signed into ATS. Now it displays how many new topics since I was last "on". It says 3, When it should be 8. There were 3 more new topics since 2pm. Shouldn't the last time I was "on" be when I was logged in? Just seems they might track you through some other method? Not a real concern you have to be tracked for this to work to some extent.

Sorry not an April fools joke, Just something I thought was strange at the time decided to post it. Hard for me to articulate though as I'm no tech expert.

What exactly are you referring to?
ie where does it show the number of new posts?

That's what I thought... the top left of profile (post count).

It's never been accurate (as far as im aware) the sites been like this for a while... hence why im saying what does it prove to OP?

Bit of a weird one.

ETA: I was upside down on the toilet there mate, sorry, it was bottom left counter for posts...

I mean, There was a total of lets say 8 new posts since this afternoon. Earlier while not logged in, On a different ip address. I looked to see what was new saw there was 5 new(at that time). Did whatever, Again cleared everything now anotther new ip.

Came back logged in, and it is only showing 3 new posts. That were new since I was last here, but not logged in.

Ok, I think I undestand what you're talking about. However, I don't think it has anything to do with IP addresses, browser cache/cookies, tracking and whatnots.

I believe the accurate number of new posts you see is simply due to the ATS server reading your computer/device clock's time and presenting, numerically and in chronological order, what posts/threads transpired at the moment in time you're navigating the site.

Are you talking about the number of 'New' threads shown on the 'Live' page?

I didn't think it was related to the user. I thought it just showed the topics posted over a certain time period.

That makes sense. Though I don't know how that would be possible without some kind of data storage. Like a cookie?

I'm no tech expert. But after clearing all that, There should be no memory of when I was last here. At least not for when I wasn't logged in my account.

It's on the first page when you log in. On the left. " There have been a total of (x) posts, Since you were last on" not a direct quote but close enough.

When you first make an account, It tells you exactly how many posts are on ATS. 1870000? Or something like that I am a few digits off.

oh ok. I never pay attention to that. I know it doesn't show an accurate number of "Replies to your posts", so I don't even look at anything it shows there.
