So there was a book I started reading back around 2005, no idea when the book was written. Pretty much all I can remember is the story is about a boy/young man who was learning to control magic and his world was being invaded by people from another world where metal was in short supply and had been all used up. The invaders had powerful magic but their weapons/armor were made from a really dense wood. I only ended up reading a few hours into the book while waiting for a ferry to Martha's Vineyard, would love to find out what book it was and finish it.

Sounds like it could be from Raymond E. Feist's Rift War books

Without another word Pug scampered up the bole of the ngaggi tree, a firlike swamp tree the Tsurani harvested for wood and resins. With few metals, the Tsurani had become clever in finding substitutes. The wood of this tree could be worked like paper, then dried to an incredible hardness, useful in fashioning a hundred things. The resins were used to laminate woods and cure hides. Properly cured hides could produce a suit of leather armor as tough as Midkemian chain mail, and laminated wooden weapons were nearly the match of Midkemian steel.

I read all of them quite a few years ago....really enjoyed them.
I think Feist's books all got a bit 'samey' much later on.

Still, I might just dig them out and re-read them.

To me Janny Wurts's influence made a big difference in these books. As opposed to where Feist did it alone. a reply to: Freeborn

Same: enjoyed the earlier books, got a bit bored later on and might also read them again. Even played a PC game based on them - Return to Krondor, if I remember right. Pretty decent game actually for its time.

There's about 30 Riftwar books by now:

I liked the series written with Janny Wurts and were vital to the progression of the stories in The Riftwar Universe.
I think I read up to The Serpentwar Series but gave up on them a couple of books or so after that....all getting rather predictable and to be honest with you I thought the Pug/Milamber storyline was kind of getting ignored.

Like I said, I might just give them another read.
