Now that most of us have Covid in the rear view mirror I’ll love to hear about places in the US that are off the beaten path.

When I moved to Florida every single week I would go visit a new place with my kids. Some places were a bust, but we found a lot of really cool off the beaten path, local places that tourists would never know about.

I’d love to hear about places like that. We want to start traveling asap but are not looking for touristy places. Natural place, unique places, just plain quirky places YES. Love small towns, interesting architecture. Totally up for places within places, like a cool area of the city etc.

I’ve lived all over the US and have visited many many states, but I’m sure there is still so much out there that would surprise me! So please, let’s hear it!

I’ll share my unique places.
Florida - Blue Springs Park - To this day probably one of the most magical places I’ve ever been
Wisconsin - Baraboo - Wisconsin Dells. This place is weird, and it is touristy BUT there is a whole other side to Baraboo! Very Supernatural!
Wisconsin - Kohler Andre State Park, you will not know where you are, Does not look like Wisconsin! Beautiful water and beach.
Michigan - Mackinac Island - again, it’s a touristy place, but but but there are some HIDDEN gems here!

Back when we lived up north I put together a thread of places in the UP that were along those lines.

So you want to visit Michigan's Upper Peninsula?

Cathedral of the pines, Lakewood Wi. Really cool story. A stand of old growth pine trees. Conners lumber harvested trees by “clear cut” back in the day. Seems mrs Conners and the kids used to go to that spot and she forbid him to cut it. I’ve been there several times in the winter. It’s a spiritual place in my opinion. Look it up. It was in the middle of nowhere.

My wife likes the Four Corners Monument Navajo Tribal Park where Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado and Utah meet. We used to go every year in November but haven't been since 2019. Find a local native who does small tours and you will see some cool stuff.

A lot of the places on there won't be open for a couple months yet, if they'll even open back up at all. I have no idea what the situation is up there anymore.

You can check Only In Your State and Atlas Obscura for good things to do and places to go. We've been using that down here for the last couple years with good results. You can also find some cool placesnby geocaching as well.

Northern California's "lost coast".

"The Lost Coast is a mostly natural and undeveloped area of the California North Coast in Humboldt and Mendocino Counties, which includes the King Range. It was named the "Lost Coast" after the area experienced depopulation in the 1930s.[1] In addition, the steepness and related geotechnical challenges of the coastal mountains made this stretch of coastline too costly for state highway or county road builders to establish routes through the area, leaving it the most undeveloped and remote portion of the California coast."

en.wikipedia.org...

Right next to Redwood National and State parks. Tallest trees on the planet. Like being in a cathedral. Prime Bigfoot country. Pretty much like nowhere else on Earth.

There is a small town in a state in America where the wife and I go to vacation almost every year.

I'm afraid to mention it because I don't want anyone else to know about it.

I'm not to familiar with some areas up there. Placer county mostly and areas bordering northern Nevada.

But I have ventured to Crescent City California. An old friend has worked at a jail up there.

Such beautiful country.

Edit: WOW, I forgot about the RUBICON JEEP TRAIL TO TAHOE. Dirty Dozen Jeep Club.

Edit: I don't know WTFrack. Has anybody gotten a predictive text so off the mark, you have to share?

I was typing, when the Red Line was under California. It gets fussy with the Period sometimes.

**Warning dirty word** rhymes with "literal"
