It's impossible to know for sure... but no doubt more than any of us want to believe. And, unfortunately, that seems to be a universal truth across the globe. Britain and USA aren't exceptions no matter how much we want to believe otherwise.

But then what? Or, more to the point, who? Who will fill that void? And what's to guarantee they won't be just as bad or even worse?

It's obviously not my place to tell Brits what to do or what to think about your Royal Family, but if it were me, I'd be looking at reforming the role of the monarchy rather than abolishing it. In spirit, the monarchy and working royals serve the nation and her people. That's nothing to sneeze at. If it's not working in practice, then make the necessary and proper reforms.
