Massad was an ex-LEO who transitioned to training LEOs, most particularly around the ins/outs of legal doctrine that applies to their line of work. Additionally, Mr. Ayoob is very active in the rec firearm community as an amazing, wise and incredibly knowledgeable resource for us private gun owners, when it comes to things like proper way to communicate with an officer when you're carrying and have been pulled over, what to do and what NOT to do if you're involved in a shooting, and various other aspects of good, sound practices for being a responsible gun owner.

Mr. Ayoob is a member of the Wlson Combat team, who operates a channel on YouTube. You can find Mr. Ayoob's videos on the Wilson Combat YT channel.

Last few videos...

His entire collection of videos on YT.

My pleasure. I find myself watching Massad's videos for an hour or two, he is so incisive, articulate and incredibly informed. He seems to have the recall of case law like an attorney, but he isn't one. Would love to meet this dude one day and shoot the breeze (as it were)

Thanks. Yes, a good resource.

He's actually an "Ask an Expert" on the big gun forum Glocktalk. People literally post questions to him in threads and he often answers them. I think he's also a mod there.

This guy makes his living teaching. I would guess his first consideration is liability followed closely by sustained marketability.

Be very careful learning something that is difficult to unlearn ... or a stoopid waste of time learning in the first place.

I hear you, and there are a lot of such videos like that on this topic (e.g. endless arguing over whether you should carry with a round chambered or not). Can you point out some things (presumably related to gun ownership) that you consider a waste of time?

I've watched a dozen or so videos from Mr. Ayoob, and the vast majority are not really teaching mechanics of gun use, though I did see he had one on different pistol grips. Otherwise, most of the videos are informational, about legality issues and frankly things I don't want to unlearn.

He just put up a video about his top 5 guns to own, or something like that.

I think, in general, the folks at Wilson Combat are very bullish on 1911s; they have a lot of material on those.

Nice. Here is the link to the gun forum (and other topics) that he is a supermod of.

I'm partial to Paul Harrel, but his focus is slightly different.

He doesn't teach reality. I get that ... I really do. I don't watch his videos in their entirety so I can't 'take them apart' in any meaningful way. So, I'll give you a couple of examples of 'things I remember' that I can make examples of.

He says when he's teaching, his students are not allowed to insert their finger into the trigger well until just before they fire. That finger position requires a large movement to the trigger just prior to the moment of truth.

I don't know if he's ever addressed how radically a person's life changes after they're involved in a shooting, but I know he's got a video posted telling you to wait around for the cops to show up. He might want you to do that. You, on the other hand, may not. It is situationally dependent ... and he doesn't tell you 'the whole truth' on the subject.

Watching videos of this type are a very costly investment of your time. Better a new shooter invests his time in hands-on training. You take a 'real gun handling course' and you will be exposed to a plethora of war stories from which you can glean all kinds of real-world knowledge. You re-take that class as many times as you need to become an expert at teaching it yourself ... and then tell us you continue to recommend watching Ayoob's videos.

Become an expert in 'the art' of carrying your firearm. When absolutely no one suspects you are carrying, you win the kewpie doll.

Practice with your pistola until you can consistently pull from your holster and hit a heart-sized target at 20m. The difference between hitting that target reliably at distances of 7m and 15m is stark. Probably take a dedicated shooter a year to do it at 20m. And, I watch most shooters give up at a distance appreciably less. They wind up experiencing what they need to become a self-learner. And that's good enough for anyone.

If you can't do these things now, please come back and tell us when you've gotten there. Tell _me_ what your key learning points were ... and the idiot stuff you saw along the way.

Cheers,
Snarl

Good suggestions, thanks

You piqued my interest when you said leaving the scene is situational-dependent, and about the "whole truth". Can you elaborate more on that?

Let's assume you shot someone in true self-defense, you did all the right things per the local/state laws, you're properly licensed etc etc. So leaving out some kind of stealth op, SHTF scenario, criminal considerations, it's just defending yourself, what would make you hesitate to stick around for LEO, knowing that IF you're connected to the shooting later on somehow, it'll look really bad that you fled the scene. Are there cases/incidents you know about that contradict this idea?

On the whole truth: Do you want people you know to reconsider their judgement of you? The cops are not going to disassociate your identity from that act, and it will follow you around wherever you go.

Two scenarios spring to mind: Road Rage & Town Bully

If you have to defend yourself from a bad guy, the cops are gonna find out who the dead guy was. They're also gonna put two-and-two together and probably won't be looking very hard for you. Your job is to not completely give yourself away at the scene ... or you're gonna be stuck staying there and going for a very very long ride.

And believe me ... you will not be 'considered innocent' ... until you are so declared. That's the biggest BS misconception anyone could ever be sold on. The system is designed to prosecute. You WILL be prosecuted. It WILL cost you enormously in terms of time and attorney's fees. You WILL be inconvenienced every step of the way.

Situationally, it may be better to just walk away (even if walking away is a crime all by itself). We (all of us) commit crimes daily. Those acts are inherently what make us free. How free are you?

How free do you want to be ... is really the question.

I was watching his video on what to say to Police after a self defense shooting yesterday, this guy is on point, well worth checking out.
