I did not know that. I thought 41-42mm was max for Rolex. Interesting.

They're trying to be hip and cool after being a geezer watch brand for so long. Nothing screams, "I'm an old man", more than a 41MM Datejust with a bi-color bracelet.

Watch people buy Panerai's, people who think they're watch people buy Rolex's.

Yacht master I & II (42), Skydweller, Sea dweller, Deepsea, Explorer II (42), DateJust II, Datejust 41, Oyster perpetual 41, Submariner/" date 41, Day-date II, - Are all 41mm and above.

Panerai were owned and designed by Rolex SA and used Rolex movements except the GPF 2/56. Rolex is in everyway the more superior brand.

I stand by what I said. It's a geezer brand for geezers who like to think they know about watches. I'd put my Lange, Panerai or even a Mickey Mouse watch on before I put on a Rolex.

I'm not exactly sure what the deal was with his watch. The seller was a licensed Rolex AD and I'm pretty sure they're legit because they operate out of the same building as the diamond seller I bought the wife's ring from (Shane Co.). It was kind of a weird deal though. Some guy bought the watch and owned it for like one day when the Rolex he'd always wanted came in also. He returned the watch so he could get the other one. So, while it was technically 'new', it had been owned for one day. He did get a discount on it, and they didn't give him any hassle getting a refund of his full purchase price. And yes, I do believe it was some kind of a mainspring issue. I really don't know any more than this, just a really weird story. It may well have been grey mkt. (some of those are pretty convincing anymore).

That's your personal preference and opinion which you are entitled to. Lange are good no doubt.

I tend to agree, there's a certain type of person that wears a gold Rolex.

I don't really like the style of most of their watches with the exception of the black bezel submariner so can't say i'd wear one, some people definitely buy as a status symbol. For me they're quick flip investment opportunities.

They do however hold their value very well, are extremely well built and reliable timepieces, nobody can debate that.

My personal watch choices:

Daily wear, has quick release bracelet and optional leather strap:

Dive/Sports (not even opened the box yet):

Then an assortment of old trash watches i've collected over the years.

Not sure what i'd say is my dream watch, maybe some grand complication from Vacheron Constantin. Damn they're pretty.

Yes, definitely. Currently awaiting a confirmation regarding an offer for the Rolex Explorer, once i've recouped that i'm going to purchase another.

I'll PM you, most likely end of next week before i'm ready to purchase another watch.

I like Lacroix, I got my wife one a few years back, they make some interesting lady's models. I agree that if you're flipping them then the personal style plays no importance, it's probably better to do ones you have no affinity for so you don't get attached.

As for dream watches, I had the IWC Portugieser Siderale Scafusia on once, that thing is almost comical with the amount of functions it can do, "Oh, excuse me, is that my watch chiming? Oh, yes it is, so sorry...".

I'm sure technically IWC watches are outstanding, it's the kind of thing i imagine a Luftwaffe pilot pairing with a Hugo Boss jacket, just a little soulless with the design.

For watches i would buy it needs to either be about functionality or in formal settings something that appeals to my eye, based mostly on how the crystal and dial catches / plays with light.

As i'm at work most of the time it's just a good old G-Shock that keeps my wrist company and crack out the Lecroix for everything else that doesn't require me to wear a toolbelt.
edit on 20/1/22 by Grenade because: (no reason given)

I'm soulless so I kinda like my IWC.

My day to day is my Breitling Super Ocean which is also my go to dive watch. I have around 12 watches so I can mix and match them with what I'm wearing and/or where I'm going. I don't like men's jewelry, unless you're a pirate, so watches are about all I wear when it comes to that kind of thing.

No doubt sold it to Baphomet, i hope you got a good deal.

You've probably been playing the watch game longer than myself, between my kids, women and various other vices i never had the chance to invest so it's like an exciting new world. Decided the one thing i would treat myself this year was to a nice watch around £5k, i ended up buying two and they didn't cost me a penny due to this crazy market.

Since 2000 or so. When I had my restaurants I needed to do something with the cash so I started buying timepieces but sadly got attached to too many of them.

I still get one every once in awhile since I enjoy them but I really don't need any more at this point although they have held their value very well and in most cases have appreciated.

Kind of what i was thinking, can have a lot of cash wrapped up in a tiny package and a steady / historically safe market. The key like everything else in life is not to overpay, strategy is to wait for the right deal and discount. What brands do you reckon hold value well over say 5-10 years outside of Rolex in the under £10,000 range?

My IWC, Panerai's, Ulysses Nardin and Lange are all worth more than I paid for them but I haven't been paying attention to the short term trends to be frank.
