Ok, first a little about me.

I never introduced myself properly in the introductions. I have lurked here for some years, but actually joined ATS about 6 months ago. I am 66, retired, single with no children at home, and live in Louisville KY. I currently own just a common 4 bedroom bedford stone home with a finished basement in the suburbs of the city. From the header is suspect you know what this thread is about. What I would like information on how the schoolie life is, pro or con. I know I am going to sell my home, and don't have a definite plan of where I am going to go or what I am going to do. I just know I am leaving. I also know SOMEONE on this forum has had these types of experiences. I would just like your input on what I should expect. I will be honest, I don't really want to drive a 40 ft schoolie, (although I feel I could), since I used to drive a 53 ft, tractor and trailer in my younger years. My eyesight and reaction times are definitely not what they were when I was younger, so I am kind of relegating my self to the short bus (if you will)..Help me out here. If I don't do this now, I probably never will. When it is all said and done, I think I will have around 145,000 dollars to work with from the sale of my house. I could buy another place further out in the country, and would not hate myself for doing that. Just looking for options for an old fart who is looking for a new life.

Awesome, rick! I have an idea you might consider and even somewhat alluded to. A small secluded purchase somewhere with a simple charm that could always be a haven for whatever your adventure ride is. Provides a security blanket that way in my thinking.

I know some folk that got a bluff view relatively cheap and threw up basically a huge carport they pull their ride up in when "home" and they did enclose a small section on one end. Sweet.

Good Luck!! Should make some GREAT road threads.

I'm not sure I understand. Are you debating between driving a school bus (for a job) and buying a house in the country???

Not sure I understand what debate there is in that. If you can pay the bills, definitely go for the house in the country! Not even a 2nd thought here, but admittedly I am biased (even people who live in the boondocks say we live in the boonies by comparison!). I wouldn't have it any other way.

On the other hand, if your question is 'what should you do for a job after retirement?"...I guess my response would be to do something you really like doing. I'm not far from retirement myself, and I think if I had to go look for a job after retirement, I'd probably apply for work at a lumber yard. That is, IF I needed to find a "job", job. First though, I think I'd try my hand at freelance photography because unless something crazy happens, and we've played our cards correctly, I should be pretty good with minimal monthly bills (no mortgage, car/truck payments, credit cards or utility payments beyond electric).

Personally, I think I'd look rather dapper sporting an orange vest at HD even, if I do say so myself! I don't think I could deal with 50-60 adolescent attitude problems all wrapped up inside an aluminum container (with me) without contemplating a homicide...or hari-kari!

ETA - OR, are you talking about LIVING IN a school bus???
