I've been saying it for years but it's now been confirmed, students these day are more intolerant than ever and have far worse impulse control than ever.

Which explains why they are so much quicker to denounce those who think differently from them, and are so much quicker to resort to violence, than previous generations.

Apparently part of the blame is down to social media.

Anyway, here's a link

They mention students and never take into account the "curriculum" or the professors?

Nothing to see here, just social media rearing it's ugly head again. That's not to say that social media isn't a factor, but students aren't learning their courses from Facebook or Instagram, etc.

Students start to get a bit puffy during high school, then when they reach the collegiate level, they lose their minds. Social media serves to reinforce the behaviors, but the roots are imbedded in the courses and faculty.

I personally think it rests on a few things, but social media is a big factor.
In my podcast I touched on something like this while recording last night.
How social media is life’s norm for todays kids. But when I grew up, the most advanced thing we had was first the Atari, Commodore 64, and then Nintendo.
If we were able to reach in our pocket and pull out a handheld device that allowed us to communicate with each other, unfiltered - our telephones were tethered to a wall lol, then we too probably would have some issues.

Thats a good point also.

The difference between private school and public school, even here in Canada is astonishing.
My oldest child went to public school and when we compare the milestones between her and her younger brother and sister who both went to private school, is mind boggling.
My youngest was bringing homework home in grade 2, that my oldest was bringing home in grade 4 or 5.

While I agree with the premise, doesn't the blame of how the current generation turns out lie with the previous generation(s) raising them and shaping the world? Personally my own children are not and will not be this way due to proper upbringing. Not sure how to combat everyone else's kids?

Once your kids come home (if they are still young) crying and moaning they need a cell phone and are being bullied because they don’t have one and if they don’t get one right now it’s the end of the entire world….
You’ll see.

It's due to the lack of fire on dat ass when they misbehave, whether you believe it or not. I was a holy terror when young, never afraid of authority except for my parents.

Oh yes I'm familiar with that. We said up front they could have a phone once they hit high school. We homeschooled up through 8th grade. So now both my kids have a phone. They do not however have facebook or twitter or instagram or any of that social vomit networks. So far so good.

Mmmhmmm. Completely agree.

When the wooden spoon becomes a well known inanimate object, you know you have a mechanism of authority.
I had multiple broken over my ass.
Then it was the plastic spatula.
The spatula covers more surface area and has that spring to it.
You can get some pretty loud cracks outta it.

First for me it was, go get me a switch, and don't come back with some little ol piddly thing, then went to belts, and after hot wheels came out the tracks for the sets became their preferred instrument.

Now don't get me wrong, they didn't beat me like some unwanted redheaded step child, the punishment fit the crime.
I always got a kick out of the principles and deans in school, especially high school. We had one dean who prided himself on being able to bring tears to the eyes from those that choose the board of education over detention or suspicion.

I always took the licks and walked out smilin, cause on his best day his paddle couldn't to come close my Ma, and what he could do was nothing compared to what Momma or Daddy would do if they had to come pick me up after school or I had to stay home.

What are ten things a student can always count on?

Their fingers.

I loved my time being a student back in the day, then again social media was pretty much in its infancy and the likes of Facebook still a twinkle in Zuckerberg's eye.

I feel what you are saying about cutting your own switch. Talk about a dilemma. Trying to find the right one with enough flexibility and good sound, versus one that was to stiff and hurt like hell. God forbid mom picked it as she would always err on the stiff side.

In an instant gratification society, plugged into an endless stream of stimuli, it is difficult to develop patience, delayed gratification and impulse control. Television/commercial breaks, internet, social media, the slow death of reading and other activities requiring sustained single pointed concentration all play a part in the erosion of attention spans, memory and self control.

If I were to put on a tin foil hat, I would say it seems society is being engineered to create the mentally stunted citizens/proles/classes of 1984/brave new world.

Maybe but as mother of two young adults that I taught them to earn their way in life and become useful members of society and to think for themselves and question everything and anyone, my children are very successful today.

The new entitlement nipple sucker's generation believe they disserves everything without working a day in their lives, they are nothing but idiots.

How much are they going straight from perception to emotion without going through intervening rational thought? I think this concept would explain much.

The big takeaway is that they're intolerant and reactionary.
