the phrase STAY SAFE.

--

It's such a cowardly phrase.

By the way the word saFe is related to saVe.

While saving can be prudent (PRUDENTial Insurance - just noticed that), it can also make you a PRUDE. At some point saving too much is just a reflection of being (excessively) fearful and/or greedy.

The term is so nebulous and has emerged due to COVID. Who the # started saying this? Must have been some wuss on TV.

What does "stay safe" mean? Should I cower at home on endless Zoom calls while wearing a mask and taking a daily covid test?
Should I wear a mask in my car?

That term didn't just arrive out of thin air because of covid....
I say that to pall's before they go on a journey as they to me. Been saying it for many years.
Clearly it makes you uncomfortable because of covid. Maybe look into that.

When I was an EOD tech in the Marine Corps we would say "stay safe" to each other.

Don't know when it became common to say to folks going to the store.
It's definitely weird.

I usually say 'drive fast and take lots of chances'.
My kids laugh at that one.

Then there's this (language):

In German you wish someone who goes on a skiing holiday a 'break your neck and leg' as it is 'bad luck' to wish good luck, because the 'universe' might do the opposite.
They do that in the UK for theatre actors I think, wish 'break a leg'.
So 'stay safe' would be really bad to say. Unless you mean 'please behave in a safe way and make good decisions'.
Hahaha 🤪😵

Usually when one says that, it’s because they care enough about the person, they mean it.

To be fair, a friend of mine had been telling me this for a few years before 2019, which I was having trouble understanding. It gave me a similar feeling as your having now. I used to always say "peace out bro" . Now everyone is on this stay safe stuff, and I'm just thinking, where did everyones balls go??

Like, how does one stay safe differently then we did ten years ago that it's become the new parting phrase??

It's becoming a mantra. A cliche. I remember when the slogan ''have a nice day'' took off. It was kind of a hippie thing as I recall from that time. First it was young women with beads in their hair and pot in their heads. Then it started being used by window clerks at the local McDonald's. People say it and don't even think about it any more.

Reminds me of being in a restaurant when a server takes your order. The way they always say'' great choice'', making you feel special that your discriminating palette is some how superior to the general grubber that eats there. Yesterday I went through the drive through at Subway. They ask you all the questions about how you want the sandwich. When you answer whether or not you want it toasted, they reply with ''aw RIIIIIIIGHT'' as if you are doing it the right way rather than the wrong way. Two points for that choice.

Stay safe, at least requires some kind of request for increased consciousness. Pay attention out there, it's a bitter world. I won't be surprised though when somewhere down the line when the Subway window clerk hands me my sandwich and then tells me to Be Safe.

I don't know. It doesn't offend me at all when my husband tells me to drive safe each morning, but I've commuted for 20+ years, and I've "seen things" to put it euphemistically. No bad thing to have someone tell you to drive safe.

I was in the Marines but switched to Guard Officer Engineer. We used a lot of USMC EOD videos in the DEMO class.

When I was young the saying upon leaving a group was " be good". Mostly the females said it. The boy's were way more crude and direct. " Keep it between the ditch's bitch's " was quite popular. But the wussification as you call it is multifaceted animal...for one the LGBTAFGHLKUZXQM groups ...I hope I got all of them and they haven't added a new letter & I didn't know...don't want to slight anyone. These groups are running amok. Poor girls in school and college are having their sports just stripped away from them by those from one of the LGBTAFGHLKUZXQM groups.

Anytime I've ever heard the phrase "Drive Safe", my thought has always been that it's not me that needs to hear those words. It's all the other idiot drivers who may end up anywhere within my near vicinity that need to hear it. It only takes one idiot to completely nullify the fact that I'm driving safely.

Honestly, that's generally my reply, but at the same time, you have to drive safe to avoid those jerks and keep them from killing you. The ones I hate most are the ones who think their vehicle and yours can occupy the same spot in the space-time continuum because they neglected to check before changing lanes.

It doesn't roll off the tongue quite as smoothly, but maybe instead of 'Drive Safe' it should just be 'Drive Defensively'

"Have a nice day." That's where Carlin comes in. I love that routine.

It's like "have a happy and safe holiday". With some of the stuff I used to like to do when I was younger "happy" and "safe" were diametrically opposed.

It can also mean ....do what you have to or whatever it takes. Sometimes stay safe can mean defending what is yours at whatever cost. That is what I gather from that phrase when it is said to me.

“Stay safe”.

When I used this phrase in the past it was when we were ice climbing or motorcrossing.

Now it’s used every time we see someone about to step outside.

It removes all meaning. Sort of like “how ya doin?”

We say it without even expecting an answer.

Overuse of phases takes away from their real purpose.

By design or accident that’s what’s happening now.
