150 million people believed that Biden was the best candidate in the history of the US.... the masses are stupid, sorry to break it to you! Experience is saying im 100% right, and i know this since I been invested in crypto since 2011.
How many of those 750,000 Shib holders know more than me? could probably count them on one hand!

High short term volume can certainly bring up the spot price... But market mechanics will dictate long term price action.

How do taxes work on this? If value goes up and down, are taxes incurred on the ups? Hypothetically, could an investment of a couple hundred without selling, and therefore not actually getting paid, incur big taxes?

I hold Shiba for fun, anything is possible in crypto. It will go up and if people can hodl it may keep up on correction, but how many people will double and run?? If more is burned and use case increases then possibilities increase. Ride it for a bit anyhow Dodge did the unexpected with an endless supply....

I've heard the argument for high supplies.
It's a gimmick with no real advantage.
Do people like getting coins they can buy millions in quantity of, sure.
But at the end of the day it doesn't matter.
If you throw 1,000 at something and it's value increases by 50%, it doesn't matter how many of them you had.
It's not good or bad, it's just a small psychological marketing trick.
But having hundreds of trillions in supply does have an effect on price ceiling. Supply and demand is the engine of free markets. Supply exceeds the amount of people on earth and fiat currency in existence.
Momentum trading can make you money sure... But if you don't understand the mechanics you'll get burned.
