After previously declaring itself free of Bird Flu, North Korean state media (KCNA) has reported an outbreak at three chicken farms in the capital Pyongyang. No date has been given but it believed to have been discovered about a month ago. The source said it occurred at Hadang, the North's main chicken factory.

KCNA said state health and quarantine officials "have buried and burnt hundreds of thousands of infected chickens at those farms" to prevent the avian influenza from spreading to other areas.

"So far, there have been no case of workers or employees infected by the disease at those chicken farms where bird flu broke out," KCNA said.

It is the first time that bird flu, which caused serious health risks in south-east Asia and China, has hit the isolated country.

North Korea had previously declared itself free of the disease.

Given the secrecy of the North Koreans we may never really know the extent of the outbreak or the measures being taken to control it. It is also very worrying that this has occurred in a densely populated urban environment.

was just about to post the same thing.

not sure what the cause of bird flu is but I am sure that the cure has been around as long as the flu has..

Link to Vaccine info

It would be possible to keep North Korea ina submissive state by holding the cure to their poison.. I believe it is not unfeasible for chemical oppression to be used in modern day environments. I would find it hard to believe that many of the chemists involved inthe creation of such vaccines are working indepedent if government backing.

Bird flu would be nightmare in North Korea, experts say
posted March 16.

SEOUL (AFP) - Health experts are hoping that reports of a bird flu outbreak in North Korea prove unfounded, saying the disease would prove a nightmare to combat inside the isolated Stalinist state.

Information reaching the outside world from North Korea is notoriously hard to verify and South Korean officials said they are unable to confirm a report that the North is suffering its first outbreak of avian influenza.

"It would be a nightmare if it's true because we need governments to work with us and that might not be so easy with North Korea," said an official of the World Health Organization who declined to be named.

N Korea requests Seoul's help in bird flu fight

Officials in Seoul say North Korea has asked South Korea for aid in fighting an outbreak of bird flu.

South Korea's Unification Ministry says it has received a message from North Korea through an inter-Korean border hotline.

North Korea has called for quarantine equipment and medical goods to contain the spread of the poultry disease, which broke out in the country on February 25.

The ministry says North Korea has culled and buried about 210,000 chickens infected with the H7 virus, which poses no danger of human infection.

North Korea's own official media says infected farms have been cordoned off and quarantine checks were tightened at airports and seaports.
