SEOUL (AFP) - Health experts are hoping that reports of a bird flu outbreak in North Korea prove unfounded, saying the disease would prove a nightmare to combat inside the isolated Stalinist state.
Information reaching the outside world from North Korea is notoriously hard to verify and South Korean officials said they are unable to confirm a report that the North is suffering its first outbreak of avian influenza.
"It would be a nightmare if it's true because we need governments to work with us and that might not be so easy with North Korea," said an official of the World Health Organization who declined to be named.
Officials in Seoul say North Korea has asked South Korea for aid in fighting an outbreak of bird flu.
South Korea's Unification Ministry says it has received a message from North Korea through an inter-Korean border hotline.
North Korea has called for quarantine equipment and medical goods to contain the spread of the poultry disease, which broke out in the country on February 25.
The ministry says North Korea has culled and buried about 210,000 chickens infected with the H7 virus, which poses no danger of human infection.
North Korea's own official media says infected farms have been cordoned off and quarantine checks were tightened at airports and seaports.
