Well having been in the ''senior service'' i can honestly say they are in need of some better ships in particular we need new and bigger aircraft carriers but thats a different story. I want to know what people think of the new type 45 destroyer, it seems to incorporate stealth and is considerably larger than the type 42, at just over 7,000 tons. How will it compare to the equivelant US ships? I would say that the crews are generally better trained than US crews but how will it compare tech wise?
the first should enter service in 2007.

iirc the us is just making a very long ranged gun not a railgun.

I heard and seen reports of an EM gun, thats what I found attractive about the DDX...mabye it was just a experimental idea?

The DDX displaces 12,000 tons and is equipped with 2 155mm caliber munitions capable of hitting targets accurately up to a distance of 100 nautical miles, with about 750 round for each gun. These 155mm guns will use shells with PGM capability using GPS to accurately hit their target. It will employ Evolve Sea Sparrow missiles and Tomahawk Block IV missiles along with Advanced Land Attack Missile [ALAM] is a Congressionally directed program to fulfill Navy and Marine Corps operational requirements.
It will have precision attack capability for ranges greater than the current Land Attack Standard Missile (LASM) with lethality and responsiveness to support the Marines Corps Operational Maneuver From the Sea (OMFTS) and Ship to Objective Maneuver (STOM) strategies. Hope that clears it up. It will also carry 2 SH-60 Seahawk helicopters.

Here is the link and a picture for reference.

Also The DDX will have about 150 crew members onboard. I think this is less than current U.S. destroyers, but I'm not sure.

She is a beauty alright, looks a little top-heavy tho...thats quite a structure above the bridge. I wonder what her ASW capabilites are?

The DDX is 600FT long and is capable of passing through the panama canal. I’m not sure how wide the DDX is thought.

The top is probably light as hell cause of just radar and stuf...

She probably will have light ASW stuff due to that being handled by her heli and the FCS....

The DDX doesnt seem to be very spaced out..everything seems internal....

DevilWasp I think its because this reduces its radar cross section and makes it harder to detect. Nothing is sticking out and therefore Radar refection is minimized and stealth is increased, notice that even the Cruise Missile silos are internal along with the storage depot.

they had a prototype navy trimaran in portsmouth, it was only about 80m or something but very wide. They are supposed to quiter have less drag through the water, and are much more stable for heli's to land on etc, not to mention the extra flight deck space 3 hulls can give.

Type 45's have bugger all ASW, as it is AA in design and purpose. It will, of course, have sonar, but the actual task of destroying subs will fall to the ASW Helo's it will carry and/or the Frigates in the battlegroup (or, at the mo, the entire smegging Royal Navy, as that is about all the ships it has at the moment are designed to do, killing Russian subs).

As for the new FCS, it looks sweet. I think all new ships should have three hulls, gives much more space for things, and is more streamlined.

They should do the carrier's on 3 hulls, imagine the flight deck pace you could get!

And why not bring back a large 3 hulled battleship? Not with many guns, but sporting an array of long range anti-ship and anti-ground weaponry. You could demolish an enemy battlegroup in no time
!!

Ah well...wishfull thinking for a bygone era, but I can live in hope

The future is of multi role ships that can do a variety of mission, Battle ships are gone as they would not be necessary anymore.

Looks very nice.

Would i be right in presuming that the Type 45 will be used in a carrier fleet?

It seems defensive in nature and designed to protect other ships.
