The adenovirus 26 is the virus J+J vax uses to enter cells to deliver the spike protein genome. After the first dose, people who got the vax developed antibodies against the adenovirus 26 virus, so if there is a boost, the antibodies block the adenovirus 26 from entering cells to deliver the spike protein genome, so the boost don't work well.
