Probably simply because the control system is pretty advanced in the so-called developed countries. Whereas in a village in the Andes, you can feed yourself, grow tobacco, and whatever else is your poison. Make wine or beer. I think it might be more efficient in long-term survival.So when you define what actually is meant by a "high standard of living " would the Andes or whatever dweller swap it for the stress of a developed world suburbanite.
