Last year I bought a computer, I did not know Lenovo is a chines brand, I have not use it just because I heard they have some spyware. I research a little and everywhere I looked it was the same. If true, where is the piece I need to remove, I did not use it after I found out, and I want to use it. any clues? this is one of the many links I saw saying they are spying. www.pcmag.com... Thank you.

Don't worry too much about it (Assuming it is or was new when you bought it), there is nothing wrong with its hardware (well that depends how much you are into PC's and what model it is) BUT you may want to remove some programs from it for safety reason's as Lenovo apparently came with some preinstalled malicious software.

But first a little background.

The fear that governments had was about telecommunications networks and especially the likes of Huawei a Chinese mobile phone maker whose product was both cheaper and better than the likes of Apple (But may or probably did come with some form of data harvesting malware built into them for the Chinese intelligence agency's), this was a Chinese company that looked set to dominate the world of telecommunications because of the quality and lower price of there product (Before we know they probably had spy/malware built into them).

AND of course as all Chinese company's are part owned by the Chinese government and the Chinese government were starting to become both more aggressive and at the same time China was becoming more economically powerful the US and it's allies who did pretty much what the US said started to become highly suspicious of Chinese products especially by Huawei and feared that back doors in these products may allow Chinese intelligence agency's to gather information and spy on the west.

This is not an unfounded worry but one based on personal experience since the US has had back doors in almost everyone's computer systems around the world since Windows and Intel put deliberate back doors into there product on behalf of the NSA and other US spy agency's so when they suspected China was doing the same thing and realized that China had pretty much robbed even there top secret classified technology's and had Chinese agents in almost every western technology company especially defence contractors they realized that unless they did something drastic then China would simple leap frog them by stealing there own ideas.

But a Lenovo PC be that a desktop or a laptop should be fine, if you have any worries talk to a computer expert but the biggest threats to your privacy as an individual citizen are virus and malware so just make sure you have an up to date anti virus program on your computer.

Really don't attack your PC, don't be too scared of it either but get some advice if you feel uncomfortable there are plenty of web sites that will help and many on this site may have good advice for you.

HOWEVER there was a problem going back after 2015 when Lenovo put an adware malware onto there computers - pre-installed.

It should be possible to get it removed by using any modern anti virus.

Until you get rid of that program IF it is present on your PC do not use it for ANY online transactions and even if it is not present make sure you update the anti virus and run a decent anti malware program.

This ANTI MALWARE program is good but I do not know if there is better or not.

This SHOULD catch that program if it is installed and quarantine it or remove it for you.

My PC is Asus and that is also arguably Chinese but of the Taiwan Variety, also remember many electronic goods even those from western brands are built in China and utilize a lot of Chinese components so???.

Lenovo is an IBM company that manufactures in China.

Like other computer manufacturing companies.

Lenovo had some superfish thing tied into the video card drivers. Just install current drivers and you will be fine. You will know if you dont have current drivers the moment yoy connect to a website that upgrades to secure websockets and you lose connection to the site. Which i doubt you will encounter.

IBM only has a small shareholding in Lenovo. They sold the Pc hardware side of the company (including the Thinkpad line) to the Chinese company in 2005.

I had a pre 2005, IBM branded, Thinkpad T40p which I still use today. I wouldn't hesitate to buy and use a Lenovo laptop today if they retained the Thinkpad quality.

I admit I would tinker with it to basically start from scratch with the OS, but that's just me wanting a PC that I have better control over.

If there is any spyware, I wouldn't expect it to be in the software, but at the motherboard level, hardwired to some component or other, which you can't realistically find or remove.

I think nothing is 100% safe, no matter who or where it's made, but it's not worth losing sleep over.

A lot of really weird information in this thread.

China has like 10 million other ways to spy on the United States.

They aren't picking individuals that buy retail computers.

If you obtained this Lenovo computer as a government contractor, military, or special project operator, then MAYBE you should be worried.

Otherwise, I wouldn't worry about it. The so-called "malware" that was pre-installed on some Lenovo computers was only around for a very specific period in 2014-2015.

It was just data tracking, but think more like fitbit/cookies, than government spy operation.
The thing about superfish though, is that the Chinese government "could" have been using the collected information, but by and large, the information it collected was mostly innocuous. (Websites visited, times online, etc...)

It could be used to piece together larger information systems from collecting it from a large web of users, but it really doesn't amount to much that any individual person would/should lose sleep over.

I am not sure what a thinkpad is, but it will be nice to know, is that software or hardware?

You are brilliant, I am going to find the superfish call Visual Discovery, hope I find it to kill it.
Malwarebytes, I use to have it, when they had it for free, then they want it about $120 dollars or something. but I guess is worth the investment, In reference to USA and China, I know Joe Biden has done so many silly things and almost brake America completely, wars, financial destruction, diseases and crimes, but I have to defend my Country, Chinese are humble people, their Government is Criminal, has no comparison to any country, regime, in the world, it is true that we have embassies all over the world, and we have them to see what the hell they are doing. specially if they are close to the enemy, but in no way, are we traying to patent some other courtly invention, or ideas, We the American people, gave the Internet to the world for free. for some a whole to came to tell us that is their invention. No way, we go to countries, but we are not trying to take over, like Taiwan, Tibet, Honk Kong, and there is a few others, Americans are great people, it is the Government that was taking over by the Rothschilds, Rockefellers, the Royals and some others very rich and parasitic families, they found the way to suck the blood out of Nations. Every Country in the world, has a Federal Reserves. so they are the Banking Cartel Controlling all the corrupt traitors in all governments. But as far as the Lenovo, I am going to look and see if the program is there.

Thanks a lot.

HP, Dell, Alienware, ASUS, ASrock, Gigabyte, Toshiba, Samsung, and just about every other PC hardware company manufactures in China where is is the cheapest to do so.

And they all probably would have compromised security, except that the cyber and security services of most countries reverse engineer such systems to look for compromises. An example of this happened recently when 5G telephony equipment did not get approval in the UK (and a number of other countries) because of possible back-doors.

The ThinkPad was/is a line of laptop computers. IBM created the series and Lenovo continues it to this day...

For me, the laptops with the best keyboards ever made!

1. I'd be more worried about the Computrace agent which is pre-installed into the bios of many computers.

2. I'd never EVER use windows on a laptop without it being a fresh install.

3. Lenovo laptops are some of the most durable laptops out there (excluding toughbooks).

I am on my second Lenovo laptop. The first gave me trouble-free use for much longer than my previous Hewlett-Packards, a brand which I now avoid.
Nothing goes through my computer that Chinese spies could use.

Mine's a Lenovo. Seems to work like any other I've had, apart from a small area of stuck pixels on the screen I can't seem to get rid of. Do you think that's where the Chinese are spying on me?

Everyone is spied on now from a myriad sources. It's for commercial reasons rather than personal ones.

Not expecting a call from the men in black anytime soon.
