Stay safe down there people. In the coming weeks, I will be keeping my eyes on gas prices. A lot of refineries down there. Exon is cutting back on some of their capacity.

I used to live in NOLA; I have inlaws that do live in Metarie, (suburb of NOLA). The pumps wont hold and the levees will fail.

All part of the script.

Cue "GLOBAL WARMING"

That script is so worn we only have two seasons anymore - winter and CLIMATE CHANGE.

After Katrina we saw a huge spike in gas prices. Also bad news like this and fear of supply chain issues will make the stock market drop.

The Hurricane Hunter is about to do another eye pass, the last one found winds that support a cat 5, if this one confirms it we will see an upgrade.

Crazy high winds being reported by recon, over 160mph. However they maybe inaccurate as the SFMR radar is not good at estimating winds in shallow water.

Regardless, Ida is very near cat 5 strength. The difference between 150mph and 156mph is not noticeable.

The satellite view is breathtaking.

weather.cod.edu...

It was really breathtaking about 2 hours back. I see a lessening from the land not sending moisture like the Ocean It is affecting the land side of this one. I can only hope it will ease up as it gets closer to shore.
ETA
Watching Weather channel live
it is down to around 120 MPH.

Recon data confirms Ida has peaked, Radar shows that the eyewall may be trying to start an eyewall replacement cycle. This is good to limit max intensity but bad because the winds tend to spread out further when this happens.

It is looking a little better for new Orleans, unless Ida takes a jog to the east, they will miss the eye wall. Obviously the levees holding us still a major concern.

Lovely ... I hadn't considered that part, and we have trips both to Tennessee this coming weekend and St. Louis at the end of the month with Wichita sandwiched in the middle ...

Winds are still at 150mph. I am not sure what information you are looking at.

www.nhc.noaa.gov...

A new full update is due out at 11amEDT. The max winds are still going to be at 150mph but pressure might be up a couple of millabars.

I think it was at 8am ET (whatever time it went to 145mph) that they were saying the top winds (I think that's what I heard) were already at a cat 5 on the last hunter pass.

Definitely will be gas stations out of gas in those areas. Gas will go up regardless if there is actually refineries shut down or not. They always screw us one way or another.

I'm still seeing 150mph sustained winds.

11am advisory is out. 150mph, pressure up to 933mb. The NHC says the rapid intensification bhas leveled off. Radar shows a 'moat' around the inner eyewall and the extreme winds are confined the eyewall.

Landfall will happen in a few hours.Grand Isle Island and Port Fourchon will see the worst conditions. There are reports that over 20 people stayed on Grand Isle and are now stranded with some calling for help.

Surge of 15' has been observed at some of the buoys offshore of east Louisiana.

While New Orleans will likely miss the more intense winds, the angle Ida is coming in at is bad for surge in the Mississippi River.

Considering what people will be going through if this is as catastrophic as it's looking, paying a little more for gas is nothing. Even if some stations run out it would only be for a matter of days.

Will people never learn? Better to evacuate and it be nothing than stay and it be something.

Oh, I know. It's just another calculation I hadn't considered in my travel plans. Now I have to go back and recalibrate. Minor annoyance, but still there nonetheless.

Yikes. Not a good time for 9-1-1 to go down. Hope they can stay up.

9-1-1 services have been restored in Orleans Parish. Please call 9-1-1 for life-threatening emergencies only.
