I still love making Hot Hamburg Sandwiches.

Browned hamburger, gravy, corn or carrots and peas, onions, piled on 1st slice of bread then also piled on second slice.

Eat with fork.

Maybe not so cheap nowadays.

This is my fathers favourite meal!

Nice. He can't cook but he does have taste

Oh, if I have leftovers of the Hot Hamburg, I'll put it over my eggs in the morning

The Heart Attack Special.

Do you just put wax/parchment paper between the slices? I didn't think of that.

Yep! Ziploc it up.

Chinese pie.
Ground beef and onions, cooked to death- layer it down in a big baking pan.
Layer a bunch of mashed 'taters on that.
Another layer of beef.
A layer of frozen vegies- the kind that came in that big white bag... cubed carrots, corn, green bean bits, lima beans...

More taters.
Salt, pepper, a sprinkle of cheese if you've got some.

Bake at 350 until you get bored waiting.

Serve like lasagna.

Gross, but made of food and will feed a family for a week for a few bucks.

Lol! The title isn't the best. I was poor as dirt until I was almost 30. Both of my parents grew up super poor. We all ate poor people food.

I can remember being a kid and being super embarassed if we went to a bbq and everyone brought steaks or chicken and we had hotdogs with bread buns. 😂 I remember going to friends houses and being shocked at the stuff they ate.

Nothing wrong with being poor.

I mean... it's not always awesome, but poor people food is definitely a thing, lol.

I wonder why they call it Chinese pie?

So many of these meals are hamburger + that big bag of cheap frozen veggies (there were ALWAYS at least like one rotten pea, some brown corn kernels, and several bean stems that everyone choked on at least once 😂) + potatoes or beans.

Lol, I got one for ya.

Cabbage.

It really fills you up, so you feel full longer. Stuffed cabbage, one of my all time favorite dishes.

Potato soup. Just boil up some potatoes until they're mush. Add salt and pepper. Very simple and I loved it as a kid because it was something I could make myself.

Something else I love is a bit of cooked rice, some cooked frozen veggies, and a can of tuna in broth and oil. Mix all that together with some cayenne pepper, cracked pepper and lemon/herb seasoning. I can flat eat that for every meal and never tire of it.

One of the most favorite things I remember my mom cooking was a big old pot of butterbeans. So, so creamy and good.

I can remember haaaating this as a kid, too. Mom would boil the macaroni until it was 10 times it's original size. But she would crush crackers on top and blop cheez whiz on it. (If my Grandmother had gotten a 2 for 1 Cheez Whiz deal and gave us one. Lol.) That part was weirdly tasty.

I never had cabbage as a kid, but now I love it! Cut it into steaks, oil and season it it and slap it on the bbq. Mmmm. Fried cabbage with bacon and onions. Mmmm.

Potato soup sounds like the bland meal of my dreams.

I had a korean roommate when I was 19/20 and she would boil about a cup of rice in 2 litres of water until it was mush and add frozen veggies and chicken bouillon. It was so tasty and weirdly comforting.

My partner loves pickled hotdogs. One of his childhood friends had a Dad that pickled EVERYTHING. He qould feed them to all the kids after soccer.

I went to his house once and he took me to his pickle shed. It was borderline terrifying.

Cabbage is so versatile, but how could I forget collard greens. Simmered all day in ham or chicken broth some onion and hot sauce and cornbread
