I noticed when editing a thread after hitting the edit button there is an address which pops up at the bottom of the page as the edit is posting which says "Waiting for m.addthis.com". What is this?

Is abovetopsecret.com now just some kind of a DNS alias?

AddThis is a social bookmarking service that can be integrated into a website with the use of a web widget. Once the widget is added, visitors to the website can bookmark or share an item using a variety of services, such as Facebook, MySpace, Google Bookmarks, Pinterest, and Twitter.

Here

How ATS utilizes this, I know not.

Cheers

It's so that you can port ATS articles to something like FB or Twitter and you'll see the post headlines, graphics, and other preview information when shared.

this has got me wondering if this is why, from your link,

Canvas fingerprint tracking
In July 2014, ProPublica exposed AddThis for uniquely identifying and tracking users using a controversial technique called canvas fingerprinting.[20] With a storage and user identification method that is harder to block than cookie-based tracking, AddThis was able to more pervasively identify and track users' online browsing history on websites such as WhiteHouse.gov and YouPorn.com. YouPorn removed AddThis after the ProPublica article was published, citing that they were "completely unaware that AddThis contained a tracking software that had the potential to jeopardize the privacy of our users."[20] AddThis allows users to opt-out of their tracking tools via their corporate website; the opt-out process requires the user to provide name, country of residence and physical address.[21]

but of course when this post is read, denial will soon follow. we opt'ed out

the way i understand from the article it's the site that uses adthis that can opt out. not the people that use/vist the site that uses adthis

I saw that also.

It does give you pause. But we know that there is no privacy on the internet.

We know that even if we are not a "Person of Interest", we are subjects in an omnipresent surveillance system.

Oh, so the 'waiting' is the waiting for the icons on the page to load then?

Okay, I guess I kind of get it...sorta'.

Has it always said that? I just never remembered noticing that before.

I'm guessing yes as long as the icons have been there.

Yup.

It's also on the backend.

So, if you send a link from ATS in SMS messaging, it will show a screengrab of the website.

I'm not exactly sure whether or not this would be considered as 'opting out', but I never even see those 5 'Icons' on my page unless I happen to have Ghostery paused/turned off at the time. (certain websites won't load at all while it is turned on, so I temporarily pause it)

Why pinterest though?

It's the cancer of the internet, allowing other users to steal content and art, overtaking the search rank and then forcing a register/login to see my own art.

It's not that others share my comics, it's pinterest keeping user's away from the real source while being super annoying to everyone not registered. It's atrocious yet people keep doing this eagerly.

It's like someone copying off free art at an museum, taking it home, advertising it on search engines and when someone comes to see, they only show half of the drawing and say "nananana, first you register and login".

Am I the only one very upset about pinterest?
