The PLAAN 3rd aircraft carrier is being built at breakneck speed and will be the largest and most advanced Chinese carrier to date, PLAAN are also producing a vast amount of surface ships per year, it is thought up-to 20 per year which vastly outpaces US shipyards which i believe is around 10?

China's Naval expansion is at alarming speed, levels not seen since WWII so what is the Chinese strategy/plan?

Size comparison to the US Ford Class

It is thought the new Type 003 will carry the FC-31 which as you can tell is a cheap looking F-35 copy paste with dual engine however its still a giant leap forward for the PLAAN and shouldn't be completely written of

You think? Nah! I'm sure they just like big boats. Compensating for something. I wouldn't worry. Jao Baiden says they all good peeps. Hunter likes them, too. No worries.

Do you speak Mandarin, BTW? Might be helpful to learn it.

Seriously, I've always found it strange that pretty much literally every small town in the US (we have traveled by automobile quite a bit) has a Chinese restaurant owned and operated by actual Chinese. I think they are all sleeper cells. Seriously. I've always said, "Tip them well and maybe they'll remember you and be nicer to you when they take over." But probably not.

No doubt they are making ships at an alarming rate. But at what cost I wonder? Do people really believe that these ships will be the most modern tech with no issues at all? I like to believe that with their shotty workforce and tendency to cut corners most of these ships are for show and will barely hold up in sea trials. Let alone actual combat with a better trained and proven Navy like the US.

After a few weeks, welds will start to crack, shotty wiring will burn electronics, saltwater will corrode everything. No doubt they will keep producing ships. But how many can they actually keep sea-worthy?

You may be right, but I'm not entirely convinced of that.

I lived in Central Asia for about ten years. I needed mechanic tools and all I could find on the market were Chinese-made tools. I quickly learned there were two levels of Chinese-made tools. The cheap crap was just that, but there was al brand called Sata that was actually very good. The socket sets came in nice plastic cases like you'd by in any US hardware store and the hardness and quality of the tools were very good.

I think that there's the part of the Chinese economy that we all see - the part that they sell to us that is just garbage, designed and built to take our money; then there's a part where things are perhaps done well.

We'll see.

The Chinese government has wanted to be a world power for years, but the PLA Navy has always been a brown water navy. They're correcting that, and using pretty advanced ship building techniques to do it. Their ships probably won't last 50 or 60 years, but they don't need them to at this point. If they start to have serious issues with them in a few years, they can replace them. It's not nearly as hard for them to replace their ships as it is for the US.

As for the FC-31, it's far from a "copy and paste of the F-35 with two engines". You can't just build another F-35 and add another engine to it without some pretty serious engineering changes, and engineering work. Yes, they do take things from various countries, but they make pretty significant changes to them. The FC-31 and J-20 aren't as good as the F-22, or F-35, but a lot of that comes down to experience and materials science. They are however better than most other aircraft in the region, and will be a threat to our tankers and AWACS until we do something to either protect them better, or replace them with something more survivable.

They don't need an aircraft carrier to do that.

Look at the size of that crane. How the hell did they even get that thing erected.

No, but if they have carriers, they can push our carriers farther back and make it harder for us if we intervene. It gives them more flexibility and makes it easier for them.

What I find strange is that in every Chinese restaurant I go to, the waitstaff are skinny as rails. What's up with that? Remember the old adage, "Never trust a skinny chef."

On topic, from the Chinese point of view, it just makes sense. To be a world power you need a strong navy capable of projecting your will anywhere on Earth. The main drawback of a strong navy is the resources required to maintain it. China has the manpower, they have the money, so why not?

You underestimate our adversaries, friend. The same mistake was made with the Japanese before WWII.

They'll get it right at some point. Just sheer numbers of scale mean it's going to happen and they are improving really quickly.

People used to say the same about their mechanical watches............. A Sea-gull 1963 was at one time a little unreliable compared to the Swiss stuff but for around £170 today they are pretty reliable, much improved and they can reel them out at that price. Maybe it's the same principle with their ships

Quite right! But I think their main intent is to protect their installations in the Spratly Islands.

Before, or after, the Japanese army had severe health issues with their soldiers wasting away from eating NOTHING but rice for months on end?

IMO, they'd have starved/malnourished themselves into surrender quicker than we think. Can't do # when the military can barely stand upright.

This will be their first CATOBAR carrier, and is believed to use an EMALS as opposed to steam catapult system. That's going to allow them to launch much heavier aircraft.

I think the point is, the Chinese are arming for a regional conflict, what better way than to sieze Taiwan and all those fabricators?

Before the United States intervened. They weren't malnourished before our entry into the war. Their conquests may have been malnourished after their occupations but certainly not the Japanese military.
