President Ramaphosa gave a speech tonight placing South Africa under level 4 lock-down.

This includes alcohol prohibition:

The sale of alcohol both for on-site and off-site consumption is prohibited. Our Ministerial Advisory Committee has advised that the limited restrictions previously imposed were not that effective and that a prohibition will ease the pressure that is placed on hospital services by alcohol-related emergency incidents.

It also means that all restaurants and eateries are effectively closed for sit-downs:

Restaurants and other eateries will only be permitted to sell food for take-away or delivery. This is because it is not possible for patrons to wear masks while eating or drinking in these establishments.

And it's gonna stay that way for at least 14 days!

Wow Mr President, talk about kicking an industry when it's already down.

We’re the emergency powers about to expire on the 29th like in New South Wales? Now four states are closed lol.

This virus has the timing of a metronome.

Well with alcohol prohibition they'll likely have rioting in no time. Here in Colorado they BRIEFLY made that decision and stores were selling $1000's an hour in booze with people getting nervous not to have that fix. They then reversed that and kept the weed stores open too. Gotta keep the inmates passified while telling them they can't be outside. Its a fine between free range slavery and full soap on the shower floor confinement.

WTF! So basically every alcoholic in South Africa will be going dry at the same time!?

That’s going to be a pretty picture…..

Leave it to the grandiose new government’s of the world to treat everyone like toddlers.

Yeah well boo-hoo I'm a homosexual and I have a literal closet.

And it's filled with 5 liter boxes of wine.

So yeah, let's not pretend we didn't know it was coming.

There's a rumble under my bed.

Is it the shadow man?
No, I'm re-assured it's vodka bottles.

Will try to stave off that pineapple home-brew (shudder) for as long as possible.

Is that why it's a big deal to come out of the closet? leaving all that booze unattended?

Yea the Rt in South Africa is at 1.2, they can use COVID as an excuse to shut down, but it isn't likely the real reason.

They did it here in Pennsylvania back in March 2020.

Sent all kinds of folks into withdrawal.

According to an interview with a SA official I heard today. alcohol has nothing to do directly with Covid. alcohol abuse by itself is a leading cause of hospitalizations in the country and they fear an over capacity situation. They feel stopping alcohol use will help keep some pressure off of hospitals.

Sounds like they use regular hospitals for rehab, I can't imagine there would be enough alcohol overdoses by themselves that would hit hospitals daily. Useless they lump together alcohol-related injuries etc.

Throwing in the alcohol restriction looks like a social experiment.

In the second week of the lockdown they're going to introduce the following routines;

Meditation Mondays
Tofu Tuesdays
Water Only Wednesdays
Tempeh Thursdays
Fermented plant food Fridays
Sprout only Saturdays
and
Seed Sunday

A bad nightmare that we haven't woken up from yet.

One thing to point out though, or ask.

My understanding is that there were certain parts of the globe, or countries, that didn't really experience the original surge in cases or deaths in 2020. That ranged from a lot of African countries to even some countries such as Vietnam. Is it possible that they have a lower level of herd immunity as a result, and are catching up?

I think they already had the same alcohol prohibition last year during a lockdown.

I heard from some South Africans that some leading government officials had a major handle on the black market of liquor and were making a killing off it.

Not sure, but looking at graphs for Covid-19 cases in SA:
www.worldometers.info...

Yes, last year we had a ban on alcohol and tobaccos products for several months.

Pretty sure fermented plant food Fridays will be my favorite.

Speaking of fermentation if it lasts longer than 2 weeks? (we know it will likely be longer). Does South Africa have a moonshining population? Cause if alcohol is the country's number one health issue, there will be a run on copper tubing, etc.
