Something is up.
We've seen numerous places needing workers. Everyone is saying they can't find workers because everyone is
slobbing around on lush unemployment and Covid money. Well, some of that is true.. but...

I'm around a lot of college students, they aren't being hired.
I was shocked when one person in particular did not get a regular big box job that is severely understaffed. She is super smart, friendly, good grades, and excellent work history.
NOPE--- denied.. What!?? We are talking basic looking for bodies types of jobs that pay min wage. Please don't say it's because they are college students because these places have always hired them in the past to beef up summer staff.

What is going on here. Yes my little example is just one, but there are more. I'm hearing oddly similar stories. Something is up.
Are companies saying they can't find workers due to unemployment so they can have a skeleton crew and save a ton of money while
the public has sympathy and doesn't complain???!!!
Is this a way to usher in more automation and replace warm bodies?

All I know is I think more things are being manipulated than we know.

Well, I work for a major university and we have 2 openings we are trying to hire for. 1 for a budget specialist and 1 for a contract router. We've had an advertisement out for over 2 weeks. So far, I've had a total of 2 applicant submissions which normally, we would have at least 50 this long into a position hire. All this in a market that is seeing a 6.4% unemployment.

And the two applicants were from Vietnam... People are loving their free money..

Businesses aren't that smart.

Like the old saying, why don't they just hire all women so then can save 23% on wages?

Sounds like you're offering a pretty good deal! Especially for high school kids. I don't like the social media creeper thing tho. It's too nosey, IMO. Like peering into personal business. I Like the old fashioned way of checking past work experience, calling references etc much better.

The social media credit/work/life score thing is too Orwellian IMO.

Would it make sense if I agreed AND disagreed? My goal is to keep the potential riff raff out. I don't like looking through someone's profile, but at the same time, if I'm able to do that then their profile is public. One dude had a profile picture in a ski mask with a blunt hanging out of his mouth, holding two pistols beside his head. In other pics, he was holding up gang signs in clouds of weed smoke. I'm not hiring that. We have big name politicians (like Clinton in his heyday, Eddie Rispone, Bill Cassidy) that come through here and go on walkthroughs (to ask for donations of course), police officers, Sheriffs, Mayors etc. I don't want to risk hiring anyone who hates these people.

Right? My wife and I work for the same company. She runs our biggest warehouse and we make the same hourly income. I work right next to the owner and it took me 12 years to make the salary I make, whereas it took her 10 years.

Govt is doing that as well, and we in fact have a current investigation because someone posted internal email to social media because they apparently didnt like the tone of it.

Gotta expect every major company to go through social media with a fine tooth comb in todays climate.

People need to be very careful in their rants on social media and ATS is social media. It's a brave new world whether they want to acknowledge it or not. We don't even know who the new ATS owner is...you might not even want to know!!

Ummm...cmon man...you know if that were really the case...you'd fire yourself...

You've had some doosies here on ATS brother...

That's interesting. In our case they go through HR before coming to us. That's becoming a problem. I need a Drafter. The guy who was working with me got promoted. I got a look at HR's requirements for the position and told them that I wasn't qualified to be working with me. I'd take a kid right out of high school who knows AutoCAD basics. That's was the qualifications my last Drafter had. He took advantage of the Company's agreement with a local university and is going to school. Add what I taught him to that and he went right to Production Engineering. I have no problem with that. He's a good kid and going to go far. I just need another one, not some one with a Bachelor's Degree.

There is something happening. It's weird. I think it's like a snowball effect. I just quit a low paying job in the service industry because of lack of staffing. There's only so much of other people's slack that I'm willing to pull. I was there for the last 3 years but now I'm over it.

Meanwhile, I start my new, much better paying job in June. It's a work from home thing, at least for now.

did you get on with that Nigerian Price as well? It's a great gig, I just send him $500, and he's going to set me up to make bank. I start in July.

Confusing post. No, actually it's a very large reputable company here in Colorado Springs. Are you under some kind of impression that jobs requiring working from home are some kind of scam? Welcome to 2021 brother, everyone's doing it because of a boogeyman named COVID19.

I have no problems with background checks, online snooping into whatever they think they can find, or even camera's in the workplace. A job will be a fit if it's a fit, an some companies just aren't. It's better to find out up-front that a place you applied to cares more about irrelevant things than how hard you work.
Frankly I suck at smarmy social crap so if you want a dependable hard worker pick me, if you need a BS-er who looks good on paper but gets nothing done pick the other person. No hard feelings!

A guy I ran into on a job site said the most enlightening thing ever said about work.
" ALL jobs are Temporary".

Totally blew me away an changed my outlook.

It will also piss off a few, but I appreciate HR weeding out the obvious "non-fits" since I don't want to work with people who act the fool on social media an have the self restraint of a gnat. I also don't want to work with people that irresponsible. I go to work to WORK. I'm paid to pay attention an you know...WORK. Not postalize, change society, help you with your self imposed dysfunctional life or spout my own opinions about politics or world events.

NONE of that is in my official job description. It isn't in their job description either.
If HR can do me the solid of making sure people with no self control are weeded out I probably need to send them a cake or flowers. It's not offensive and shouldn't be categorized as such. On the time clock you are paid to provide whatever service the company hired you for and you agreed to provide for that time.

The rest is just entitled bull-snip an unless you are working for a company whose mission IS to change the world
leave it in the parking lot.

Life just isn't that hard.

Where I work we hire apprentice carpenters starting out at nearly $19/hr with pension and benefits after 3 months and we have trouble getting people to apply.

And quite honestly, many of the ones we do get don't understand the idea of hard work. They just want to walk around and look at their phones. No initiative, no drive at all. They just want the money, but don't want to work for it.

A lot of the others can't pass a drug test.

People just don't want to work.

The current Democrat party have been infiltrated by foreign influence, enemies of the United states.

They are quietly breaking down the moral and systemic fabric which makes America great.

With covid they broke eveyone down and now it's time to rebuild.

Reparations are already being sent. They don't have to work because minorities and illegal aliens are getting free money from the government

The current administration do mot want people to work, do not want law enforcement.

They are working to hurt you and your country.

That is true. A lot of companies want applicants social media accounts in lue of hiring. A lot of people are unwilling. I see a lot if signs up also. Read that companies are hiring and firing people quickly because they want turnover. Turnover means they can sign more people up for life insurance. They keep up the life insurance long after they leave the company and keep the insurance until they die. The payout to the company covers any training they had and any damages they caused while employed and more.

I think companies have had to adapt and learn how to work with less people, and they see the benefits and like it. I think the future is going to be largely self employment or no employment.

Sometimes I'm tasked by the director/producer/UPM to help with auditions and hiring the cast/talent. I look at every applicants facebook, twitter, tictok, instagram, snapchat accounts to see what they are really like. Quick way to ferret out the riff raff; saves a lot of time. I think most HR people are doing the same; they should anyway. Your online presence is serious and matters. I often pass over qualified applicants because of their online persona. If you act stupid online, don't even apply.

That is really jacked up when you think about the
different personalities human beings exhibit. You do
realize people naturally have three different personalities
right? You know one for work one for home and then one
with friends or recreation. So unless you find out the persons
completely rotten. That's a pretty #ty way to judge some one.
What a f#$ked up world we live in.

I highly disagree. People on social media are who they really are. Their shower thoughts, their over exaggeration to situations, all of it. I don't blame employers for looking at social media pages because it tells a lot about a person. If you don't think so then maybe you should tell facebook to rethink their business model which is gathering data and selling peoples information for targeted advertising. It's a lucrative business because it works.

You are right though, people do act different at work and around family and friends but just because they can put on a show at work doesn't mean they are actually a good person. For example, someone at my job got fired for sexual harassment and inappropriate work behavior. If they saw his social media posts then they would have saw this coming from a mile away, but they didn't because he was a good BS Artist.

I have heard that a lot of companies get special tax breaks if they hire foreigners here on work visas over American citizens, so that may be part of the problem.

So a person can follow a certain criteria on Facebook. Say one with
perspective employers in mind. And the employer will think he's hiring
superman?

That's really stupid.

Overqualified perhaps.

Just a guess.

That happens, I work the gig economy. Last regular 9-5 I applied for..didn't get it, because, the pay was lower than current wage. I wasn't looking at it that way, It is a huge company(Johnson Controls), I just wanted my foot in the door, was perfectly fine working my way up..oh well.

It's sad when people can't see beyond money.

Their loss bro.
