Everything is being weaponized including ideas, words and phrases. The effects can be subtle enough we might not even notice though they affect us. Now more than ever we need the capacity to analyze ourselves and interactions from an outside viewpoint. Non-attachment is the Buddhist principle.
These are emotionally trying times for everyone so keep this in mind. Admitting this may help to smooth communications with others and open they way for meaningful dialog. Too often we are trying to establish points and convey essential facts so hard we forget to genuinely communicate with another person. Also being a good listener is critical. If you feel someone will not listen to you we automatically shut ourselves down.
In answer to your question NRE no, you don't have to join any crowd you don't want to. Take care not to categorize people by some idea they may be promoting. Most of us have ideas that someone else would find contradictory. We're kind of complicated that way and often hedge our bets mentally by holding opposing ideas.
