I agree that milk chocolate can be kind of nasty. I'm a dark chocolate fan. Now I don't eat much anyway but dark chocolate is supposed to be healthy for you in moderation. Godiva Chocolate... that's top end. Cadbury... low end. I'm in eastern Pa so chocolate is big. Waxy chocolate like in Easter candys aren't worth buying.

I read somewhere that an american chocolate maker accidentally soured the milk in a batch of chocolate but didn't notice... People got used to it so soured milk was used in American chocolate from then on...

That's why it tastes so rank...

I grew up mostly in Germany and Belgium.

An amazing benefit was learning from a young age what real chocolate tastes like.
(real food overall actually)
I really don't eat American chocolate.

Yesterday I was at the grocery store and picked up a Reece's Peanut butter cup. It's been years.
It was so foul I couldn't even finish it. It was so grainy and waxy and devoid of any real chocolate taste.
It is like sugar glued with a peanut wax/oil with brown on the outside. People really like this stuff? Really??!!

Yes I sound like a chocolate snob, but I think most people would if they grew up with the real stuff.
It also got me thinking.. what am I eating over here that people in other countries would gag at?!
When my mom first came to the US she said she thought the food was the most disgusting, greasy that she could ever
imagine.

One place I've never visited is South America. I would like to go there someday and taste tropical fruit from the source. I know when I lived in Florida
a lot of the fruit tasted much different than that in the Midwest. I can't even imagine what it would be like in S. America.

Years ago when I used to play Everquest (MMO) religiously (my inner nerdum years), I met a Austria lad whom was about my same age and we played together for a few years online. Awesomely generous person he was. He knew I had a young daughter so every Christmas, he'd send me a gift box from his home town of Bludenz, home of the Milka chocolate factory. Goddddd I loved the box each year as it was some of the most brilliantly tasting chocolate that you have ever tasted. None of the artificial garbage the US chocolate companies use. Granted, I thought US chocolate until I discovered Milka from direct.

He ended up getting a forced marriage, to which I honestly had NO clue that was common in Austria and had to work with his inlaws actually in the Milka factory which took our playing time to zero...

So I know your joy of good chocolate and my good stuff dealer was taken away from me... Now I just pass by all the "chocolate" bars and only eat the Payday bars as they still give me some enjoyment.

Brit here. Some of our people seem obsessed with Reece's even though it tastes nothing like peanut butter.

I once had the misfortune to try Hershey's Kisses. Honestly would prefer cheap advent calendar chocolate - absolute garbage. I feel for our American cousins.

Downtown Bologna, Italy. In winter they used to have stands in winter with big blocks of chocolate. Aside peanuts, almonds and many other things.

YES!!!!!!!!!!
In Belgium I used to buy a pound or 2 pound block of chocolate. That is what I grew up on, pure chocolate flavor!

I've traveled the world and tasted chocolate from all 4 corners, and I have to say Brussels has the best chocolatiers, in the world.

Next is Swiss chocolate a few specific producers, a few specific in Italy, then there are some places in the USA that are amazing too.

People in the USA think hotdogs, chips, and nasty beer in a can is considered a meal. People, in the USA, can also be sold stuff that passes for bread, but it's actually gut-rot disease preservative bomb, in a loaf.

I do have to say Americans palettes have change for the better, in the past 20 years, but it's still not fast enough. It took the advent of "Boomers and Gen-X" traveling for business and pleasure, around the world to see they were eating dog-food back home.

Comparing Reece's Peanut butter cup to Chocolate is like calling hot dogs "beef" -- technically correct, but in reality, falling far from the truth. That is even true for "all beef" hot dogs. Yes, the parts-is-parts all come from a cow.

Still, that's not to say that people who can appreciate an aged ribeye or other lofty meats cannot also occasionally enjoy a plain ol' hot dog.

I would argue with you about quantifying ALL American chocolates as inferior however. There are places within the U.S. that make really good chocolate. I think you're the first person to create a 'chocolate straw-man'. LOLOL Kidding. Sort of.

Me, I like a Reese's cup now and then. Occasionally enjoy a hot dog, but I wouldn't call it beef.

I'm not a fan of hot dogs with one exception... The Orlando Airport had a Nathans Hot Dog place.
They had the best hot dogs, and home made Sauerkraut. One time I was craving it so bad my husband actually
drove me to the airport to get hot dogs.

What does race have to do with proper training? So you’re cool with forming judgements on race on the level of training they must have? You’re speaking like you don’t want those dirty races touching your food. who know what else you are discerning by judging race. What race should cook at Applebee’s?

Who brought up race? I brought up countries. I haven't seen any country except Japan classically train sushi chefs, have you? I don't know any other country that has a pizza TSG, do you?

I do know people who were trained in these methods that aren't Japanese or Italian respectively so I would let them touch my food.

Shall I go on?

American chocolate is formulated so that it has a longer shelf life and so that it melts at a higher range due to it being hotter on average in the US than in Europe.

European chocolate is harder to store and to transport. It would spoil quickly in places like California, Florida and Texas.

stuff that passes for bread,

Subways actually has to use a different recipe for it's bread in the EU as it contains a plastisizer that's not considered fit for human consumption in Europe.

There was also a ruling in Ireland that Suvbway's bread contained so much sugar that it was legally considered to be a cake rather than a bread.

Hershey's does have that vomit flavor.

That's because the "secret" flavoring in Hershey's Milk Chocolate is......spoiled milk.

Look it up.

Ever since I heard about it, I can't NOT smell it when someone opens one.

That being said, the OP judging American chocolate by using Reeses as the example is laughable.

We have some amazing chocolate, and I've had European chocolate. So I do know the difference
