We depend on tourism, which hasn't been doing well lately. Hawaii has the highest unemployment rate in the country. Also, at last check, the highest per capital homeless rate.

I understand the housing issue a bit according to a few natives I spoke with there.

Very little native ownership of housing. (In Maui anyway)
Mostly only generational properties.
Everything is very expensive.
Resort pricing on the drink. Only did that once. I don't really drink luckily.
I hope they get everything back opened for you guys.

Not everyone who isn't white is a "native." And a few "natives" are not going to give you a very good sample. But the actual Hawaiians got screwed at the turn of the previous century, no doubt. I can't visit my sister in Kona without either a negative test or quarantine when I get there. Hoping for that to ease later this year.
