Sounds fishy I've never had to do anything like that. I'm in the U.S.

Major red flags from the YouTwitFace beast lately.

I recently watched a youtuber describe how he was banned from instagram for impersonating himself, and the app requested ID to lift the ban.

They're really just testing to see how dumb we are. The answer is very as we let it get this far.

Meanwhile, I can listen to choice tunes without any need to sign in or verify my age

I pay for YT so I see everything. But with age restricted material, they don't want you to able to share with the wrong people. This really started taking place back in January this year. Many websites are doing this for protection.

UK citizens are now subject to new ID laws for age restricted content. If you were completely unaware of this, well that is part of the problem. You do not care about civics/legislation until it gives you minor inconviniences.

Other UK citizens have been discussing this on ATS since last year. I dont even watch much YT anymore outside of military and guerilla actions on foreign battlefields on account of no direct internet connected to my home. I just use controlled access mobile devices and public hotspots mostly, includint right now.

There was a human existence before the internet you know. I watch antenna TV while i process the pods of pigeon peas i harvest from the treees out back.

My children have grown up without internet access for three years now. They are signifigantly more well adjusted both socially and academically compared to many of their peers now.

It played for me and did not ask for any form of identity verification.
Beneath the video it said this...

"CONTENT WARNING: This film contains graphic depictions of self harm and suicide which may be extra sensitive for some viewers.

Notice
Age-restricted video (requested by uploader)"

Works for me in the US. I don't pay. Doesn't even give me a content warning.

I imagine its age restricted though. It contains drug use, violence, suicide, and maybe some strong language.

There are ways of getting around that. Just google the problem and the 4 letters you need to put in the YT link. I won't give more info because it might be against ATS T&C.

Yep, says I need to verify my age. I have been getting this more and more lately, I couldn't even watch the new Mortal Kombat trailer!

Ridiculous, the UK is becoming more claustrophobic with each passing year!

The video was restricted by the uploader as it apparently contains
scenes of self harm.

Age-restrict your own video
If any of your videos are not appropriate for viewers under 18, you can add an age-restriction. This type of age-restriction is self-imposed and is not a result of a review by YouTube.

When a video is age-restricted, viewers must be signed in and 18 years of age or older to view it.

It let's me watch this one after a warning but I have been getting the age verification prompt on certain videos over the last few weeks. There's not a chance in hell that I'm sending any ID to YouTube.

You've never had a Google account? That's literally all you need for age verification. They're owned by Google. I've never been asked for payment or photo ID.

Works fine on my phone here in England.
Could it be that you are being hacked ? I cannot imagine a website like yt asking via a video to send them very telling documents which could be used for scamming pupouses.
I would never send this kind of info to a pop up.
Why don't you ask yt themselves or go on their forums instead of having us guess?
As a rule. Nevermind who asks, if it seems odd do more probing and send nothing until you are sure.
