The RAF say it wasn't them and it doesn't sound like thunder so who or what made the Boom Boom.

A sonic boom-type noise has been heard across the south west of England which made homes and windows shake.

People took to social media at about 15:00 GMT to report the "huge bang" that lasted several seconds.

It was heard in the Dorchester and Weymouth areas in Dorset and also Taunton, Bridgwater and Wellington in Somerset and parts of Devon.

A Ministry of Defence spokeswoman said the noise was not believed to be linked to any RAF aircraft.

Ollie Peart, of Dorchester, managed to capture the noise on his security camera and described it as a "massive bang".

If it wasn't a plane then perhaps it could have been a Meteor above the clouds , seem to be a lot of them around these days.

That's the fun of the RAF saying it wasn't them. There are lots of non RAF aircraft flying near the UK that could have done it, and the RAF is telling the absolute truth that it wasn't them.

Ah, so it's like a 20 questions game where you have to ask more specifically? They don't claim they don't know who it was, only that it wasn't RAF.

There was a meteor filmed over jersey at the same time. www.itv.com...

Police and the coastguard were called but the island's harbourmaster said following inspection, and judging by images on social media, he was satisfied that it was in fact a meteor.

Exactly. In the US, they call the nearest base to where it happens. That base might be a tanker base, or something that's not capable of going supersonic, and will say it wasn't them. Now if you go to the Pentagon and ask if any military aircraft flying near where it happened went supersonic, you're far more likely to get the right answer.

Monty Python know. It's God poking through the clouds again.

Could it be any of the 6 F15s floating around the Bristol channel? I saw them high up on last Tuesday. 2 flying in close to one another, then 4 following in close order.

Wow,we only just had a decent meteor at the end of February now this one that that may have have exploded and made a loud boom.
The one that made a boom in Russia a few years ago knocked out lots of windows-maybe we got lucky as I am not seeing reports of damage.

Yes it seems that the consensus is that it was a meeor.

We now have a picture of the culprit.

Looks like we had a lucky escape.

Richard Kacerek, from the UK Meteor Observation Network of amateur astronomers, said only the brightest "bolide class" meteor could produce a rare "daytime fireball".

He added that the one seen on Saturday would have needed to be "very large" to be visible during day.
