You are just not gonna believe this.

Where I live, the weather has been snowy, rainy, damp, cold and just sucked all around. Today however is pretty nice. Mid 50s clear skies and sunny.
So about an hour ago, I was out front working on the roses. Getting them ready for Spring, turning the soil, adding some fertilizer and just enjoying finally getting outside. A woman and her son were out, him on a bicycle, her walking. He's doing what kids do. Weaving around, going in circles, just riding like kids do.
My truck is parked in front of the house and like everyone else, we have to park on the side of the street. The kid is tooling around, having fun and kinda loses it and hits the rear of my truck. I'm not worried about my old truck, but went over to check on the kid. He's fine, gets up says sorry and gets back on his bike. The kid is not hurt, not even a scratch as far as I can tell.
His Mom comes running up, panicked look on her face, whips out her phone and calls 911. The kid rides on down the block, but the Mom calls him back and tells him to stay right here.

Ambulance shows up. Swear to God she called for an ambulance.
Cops show up.

The officer taking her statement is hearing how her son ran into my truck but she thinks my car/homeowner insurance should have to pay for the ambulance call.

Gotta give the officer credit, because he's standing there with a bit of a puzzled look and trying to explain to her that your son ran into his truck. While it was parked.
It honestly took him 5 minutes to explain to her that if anyone could file an insurance claim, it would be me. He asked if there was any damage, I said no, as long as the kid is ok, I'm not worried about a little bump.
It gets sorted out, ambulance leaves, cop leaves, but the lady wants to stand and demand I pay for her expenses and says she'll call a lawyer. I point to the front of my house and say "See those cameras ?" "I have video and a police report that says you're sh** outta luck."

I don't think the kid did it on purpose, but the Mom thought she saw a chance to scam someone and got sent packing.

Welp, she just nuked the neighborly vibe.

I feel sorry for the kid, I'm sure he's been cooped up deprived of childhood and just excited to be out after a crazy year.

He does what we all did on bikes and messed up, I still carry marks from my childhood bike mistakes... And his mom goes crazy.

She's going to have, at minimum, 500 in bills for her lack of emotional intelligence.

In today's society everyone is a victim.

I was recently threatened with a lawsuit because I discovered then reported that a lady lied on her resume.

One of my first memories was when I was three.

I was running around the house, and hit my head on something. Was just running, so my blood was flowing, couple that with a head wound, and you've got a lot of blood. It wasn't that bad, it didn't really hurt, and I went to my mom to get cleaned up and she absolutely lost it. Seeing her cry like that made me lose it, I just instantly thought it was worse than I had assumed.

Moral of the story, kids are incredibly impressionable. Once I was of age to really reflect on that, I decided when I see a kid get injured, I try to be as calm as possible and reassure them that they're fine, and we'll get it squared away while not trying to minimize their pain or tell them they're over reacting.

Tone is very contagious, even with adults.

To your point, you're correct. There's a glorification of victimizing. Ironically, It has a negative impact and is the antithesis of empowerment. Perception is a hell of a drug, and by encouraging victimization, you are creating one.

There are people that make a living in this manner.
There are some suckers that will pay her cash not to file an insurance claim.
She has probably scammed multiple people.

I'd love to hear her side of this story. Not that I don't believe you, but I just think her version of the events would be more exciting. She has probably already been telling a much more emotional fantastical story. It probably even gets a little better each time she tells it.

Good strategy. Just play it cool but concentrated. My little one drank out of a thermos bottle not long ago, burned herself badly. I told her not to drink out of it the day before, when there was cold tea in it, but use a mug. So she tried again behind my back a day later, when I didn't look. But this time it was fresh, almost boiling tea water. She didn't see me refill and the outer bottle was not warm yet. I heard the click of the button to open the valve and then her scream behind me..

She opened the lid valve while the bottle was pointed at her face. Ran down her face, throat and neck onto her chest. Bottle falls down, opens and the rest went over my feet. I picked her up and danced out out the hot mess.

I knew it was really bad but didn't show it to her. Internally I was dying in emphaty on our way to the doctor. My feet were burned too. If I had made a big fuss, shown my own pain, she would have went through bigger pain and it would have been a lot worser for her. Next day the blisters opened up around the mouth, but she took it with grace. Didn't had to go to the hospital, just needed lot's of fluid food, ointment and love.

She looked a bit like the joker from Batman, but never once complained about the pain. It's all healed up now, it's amazing how fast it healed and how tough kids can be. My feet didn't heal as nearly good yet and I had socks on when the water hit them (but it's okay now).
