They want your phone number ( real phone number now of who you registered your phone with, that gives them your real name ).
Well, guess I'll have to find a new private app for the 3 people I chat with.

THERE IS NO WAY TO HIDE YOUR IDENTITY THESE DAYS ON ANY OF THESE SOCIAL MEDIA APPS.

The only private correspondence service left is the post office. Don't take it for granted, most people do unfortunately.

Excellent. People who publish lies and propaganda should be compelled to do it under their own names.

Only a seditionist or a coward could possibly object.

I 'm thinking why should we have to give up our privacy by giving up our names to get an app? That's my main reason for this post.

I'm from the old school of honesty is the best policy, but I see no honesty in their update now to use this app effective Feb. 7, 2021

Whats App is most popular in Asia.

Should we assume Astyanax is your real name then?

Or are you full of crap?

You want to chat with a friend anonymously? What kind of a friend is that?

WhatsApp chats are end-to-end encrypted. There is no possibility of anyone, including WhatsApp, eavesdropping on them.

What has really happened here is that we are returning to the world as it existed before social media. All publications are traceable to a publisher, and through that publisher, to the author. Private communications remain private. No-one pries into them unless there is reason to suspect something criminal or seditious. In such cases the authorities have the right to examine them, but under certain safeguards -- for instance, they to prove reasonable suspicion in a court of law in order to get a warrant.

Yes, you can chat anonymously on Above Top Secret, but -- unless the membership rules have changed since I joined -- the management knows who you are and will give that information to the authorities if and when it is legally demanded of them. I don’t know whether they will give up your chats as well, but I doubt that they are encrypted like WhatsApp chats.

If I make a friend here, I take our communications off ATS and on to email or Facebook, and we reveal our names, etc., to one another. Normal people don’t maintain anonymous friendships.

Your Messages. We do not retain your messages in the ordinary course of providing our Services to you. Instead, your messages are stored on your device and not typically stored on our servers. Once your messages are delivered, they are deleted from our servers. The following scenarios describe circumstances where we may store your messages in the course of delivering them:
  • Undelivered Messages. If a message cannot be delivered immediately (for example, if the recipient is offline), we keep it in encrypted form on our servers for up to 30 days as we try to deliver it. If a message is still undelivered after 30 days, we delete it.

  • Media Forwarding. When a user forwards media within a message, we store that media temporarily in encrypted form on our servers to aid in more efficient delivery of additional forwards.
We offer end-to-end encryption for our Services. End-to-end encryption means that your messages are encrypted to protect against us and third parties from reading them.

Who told you this, Qanon?

WhatsApp belongs to Facebook. Drive belongs to Google. They can’t stand each other.

You do know that WhatsApp is Europe biggest messenger app? Its used by almost everybody with a smartphone.

When you register for WhatsApp, they always needed the telephone number. It was like that before Facebook bought it.

The difference for non Europe users is that you now have to allow Facebook to use your number for their purposes. For Europe it has been canceled until may because of the outcry.

WhatsApp isn't a conspiracy themed messenger at all. But I guess if you're a political hack, everything needs to be sedition or a left / right thing.

I thought Facebook changed that for what's app last month?

Signal (What snowden uses) had such a huge influx of new users it had service problems for days while they caught up.

Yes signal went down because of it. On that Friday I installed it on three phones of my landlord. Guess they were not the only ones scrambling for help / a new messenger.
