I worked a double shift last night and a lady I know, who is a bit of an eco nut, came in to the bar, got a drink and during the course of conversation proceeded to lecture me on how the oil industry should be completely shut down and that we could just all switch to electric cars.

My first thought was "let it go" , but some folks catch me at odd times and I can't just "let it go".

I said "well, let me ask you a few questions,, ok ?

Do you wear makeup ?
Yes
The makeup you're wearing is petroleum based.
Do you drive ?
Yes.
The oil in your car, the gas, the tires and the plastics are petroleum based.
Do you have a cell phone?
Yes.
Once again, plastics in it are petroleum based.
Do you have a computer, laptop, IPad or Kindle?
Yes.
Plastics.
Do you wear shoes?
Yes.
The rubber is petroleum based and by the way, that straw you've been chewing on is petroleum based plastic.

My final comment was : 'There are over 6,000 things in your daily life you depend on that are petroleum based. Are you ready to give all those up ? "

You wanna be an eco nut who wants to shut down the oil industry ?
Fine. Practice what you preach. No, you can't ride a bike, the tires are made from petroleum. Walk everywhere you go and wear all natural shoes. Can't take public transportation, since it's powered by petroleum.
Go through that list of everything made with petroleum by products and throw them out out of your life and live without them.
THEN come and lecture me.

Most people don't realize all the things we use in our daily lives that are petro based.... plastics.

Heck, the very roads we drive on are an oil by product. ASPHALT. Roof shingles.

So glad you spoke up!

How do these people think the government is going to pull all transportation out of their @ss like tommorrow? Let’s not forget electric cars are operated by lithium batteries (which can explode), and is there a greater supply of Lithium?

There is no viable response.

Even Michael Moore has discovered that the renewable energy push is a scam.

Nobody is serious about it once faced with the reality of what these sacrifices really mean in their life.

Any time I say that all the green energy plans are a pipedream the response is always but solar but wind but but but...

It's always half baked ways to produce electricity but there is never any mention of the shortage that would be created from the lack of petrochemicals.

A typical cheap econobox cat takes the equivalent of something like 400 gallons of fuel to produce.

Electric cars take more.
Electric vehicles burn through tires 30% faster, due to torque and weight differences. A typical modern car tire takes the equivalent of about 18 gallons of fuel to produce.

Anyone who doesn't understand that oil is used to make pretty much everything needs to be educated.
I'd wager that woman was wearing at least two pieces of clothing made from oil at the time of her statement.

In such situations, I have pointed out that we need petroleum products in order to generate electricity.

I also point out that industrial hemp products can replace virtually every petroleum product (though I do think there is still a place for petroleum products) with far less expense and risk than electricity, which can only do so much.

I know virtually nothing about energy. But my dad was an engineer who worked with energy in all its forms, including nuclear power plants, and was somewhat prominent in his field. He was firmly of the belief that no source of power was inherently bad or inherently good, and that rather than put all our eggs in one basket (whether petroleum or electricity or whatever), that we needed to use the proper source of energy for the place and the task at hand. Each has its virtues and its limitations. Sometimes that would be petroleum or electricity, other times it could be hydrogen, or solar, or nuclear, or whatever. The problem was the corporations who wanted their energy interests promoted, whether they were the best fit or not. It was all about the Benjamins.

We only screw ourselves when we limit our thinking to either/or scenarios. One-size-fits-all seldom really fits all.

Why is it that long time members like yourself don't realize that you don't have to quote the "whole" OP to respond. I wore my plastic phone screen protector down unnecessarily responding to your post.

I'm not familiar with what products can be made from hemp.
Can lubricating and hydraulic oils be made from hemp? How about tires?

Did you ask her where the extra electricity for her car was going to come from? What about the mining practices for the rare earths in her car batteries? Did you question her about the toxicity of those same rare earths in the batteries after they are no good?

Also just a reminder why the Internal Combustion Engine and oil was a major revolution. They replaced horses and all the problems that came with them. Can you imagine living in New York or London in 1890? Surrounded by hundreds of thousands of horses? And those horses each producing 10 to 20 lbs of manure daily? You're world is literally covered and paved with horse****. The dust is mostly manure. That stuff on your shoes? It's not mud. That world reeked. Not that you would notice smelling it 24x7.

ICE was a godsend even though it had it's own special set of problems. And remember. It's not just your car it's your freedom. Replacing it should be left to the consuming public. Not the government.

And just think of the potential disaster that could happen in which a hurricane comes at a major population center like Miami and the bulk of the electric cars out there only have a one to two hundred mile range fully charged? All those poor b******** stuck in dead E cars on blocked interstates.

He should also ask her if she likes whales and feels they should be saved. The discovery and transition to oil and its use did more to save the whales by making whale oil economically nonviable than any other measure.

If you carefully consider we wouldnt have had the population explosion in the 20th century if it wasn't for petrochemicals.
