Well, there was an ulterior motive for telling this story.
If we use it as a metaphor for our current political situation, perhaps this is the same fortitude we need to look toward the future with, rather than apathy.
Honestly, the reality of what we're dealing with right now politically is very similar to the trajectory of this story line.
Our current political situation, and politicians, are a baby born without a brain. The inevitability of life will eventually prevail, and then we will have to rebuild our lives.

Years ago the Varsity Theater in Baton Rouge - which was on the LSU college campus - used to play Eraserhead on Friday or Saturday nights as a midnight run. I was a kid. I remember seeing the poster and the poster and name alone was disturbing in a way that I couldn't understand. It just stuck with me. I have read one or two synopsis of the movie but never have seen it. I want to, in the way one is drawn to look at a bad wreck knowing that he does not want to see what's there but he can't help himself.
