I've actually found those to be useful in a couple of places where it's noisy, and it's a requirement to have double hearing protection on.
The light flashes and I tell everyone to stop doing what their doing and answer the phone.

Ah, yes but have you ever watched a deaf person pick up the 'phone and hold the handset in front of them with a blank expression - priceless visual comedy.

As a young teenager (14 ish), i once spent a very happy evening watching a lad i didn't like pretend he was getting drunk at a party whilst drinking Kaliber (alcohol free beer from Guiness). That was a great night and he was a proper tit. Happy days!
