Well...it is debatable, but if he ain't in your top 5, you have no credibility. I just watched his video for his new song, Gnat. This guy is a lyrical genius. He has got to be one of, if not the most versatile MCs to ever do it. His word play is just in a league by itself.

I am an old head that grew up on 80s/90s hip hop. Rakim, Kool Keith, Nas, MF Doom, Pun, Biggie. I am a hip hop purist. I am all about BARS. I want lyrics that make me stop and hit rewind. I am all about the metaphors, double entendras , internal rhyme schemes, multisyllabic rhymes and the MCs ability to flow over different beat cadence... fast and slow. The technical skill of being a street poet.

I've been a fan of Eminem since I first heard him on the classic album Sound Bombing II back before he was discovered. I remember hearing him spit "The original Bad Boy on the case... came in place blowed and sprayed Puffy with Mase."

Anyways, this song he released has got to be on of my favorite hip hop songs ever. He opens up right away saying:

These bars are like COVID, you get them right off the bat!

But the star bars in the song. He says:

"Ain't nothing you say could ever Trump.
Mic Pens will get killed.
If your hypersensitive I wasn't referencing the Vice President. Chill.
My penmanship at time tends to get ill.
Violence took a skill.
That's why hence when I write the Mic and Pens get killed."

WTF? CMon... When you hear the song you really think he is talking about Mike Pence because of the Trump set up on previous bar. Then he tells you he isn't and he is talking about killing Mics and his lyrical pen game.

Finally, the way he speeds up his flow on last two verses is just crazy. Especially after referencing taking Hydrochloriqine! He speeds up 2x's and then 3x's. Absolutely insane delivery.

Anyways. I heard the song and just had to give him his props. 47 years old and still killing it. I wish these younger artist would respect the craft and step their game up from the dumbed down mumble rap.

Thanks for this. I haven’t heard it before. Great lyrics and nice horn placement.

Always liked his music. This song seems a little flat compared to his usual, less musical?, but I think the lyrics are meant to stand out for sure. Interesting lyrics to say the least.

Eminem Lyrics-Gnat

Eminem Lyrics
"Gnat"

Yeah, yeah, sick
(d.a. got that dope)

They say these bars are like COVID (Bars are like COVID)
You get 'em right off the bat (You get 'em right off the bat)
Infected with SARS and Corona (Infected with SARS and Corona)
Like you took a bite off of that (Damn)
And it goes from martian to human (Yeah)
That's how the virus attacks (That's how the virus attacks)
They come at me with machine guns (Brr)
Like trying to fight off a gnat

Still stackin' my chips, hoes, higher than Shaq on his tiptoes
Atop the Empire State Buildin', this # is like child's play, children
I will anni-nihilate, kill them, I'll # around and pile eight million
Dead little juveniles, wait, chill, then, I'll await my trial date 'til then
Ain't nothin' you say can ever trump (Nah), mic, pencil get killed (Yeah)
If you're hypersensitive, I wasn't referencin' the vice president, chill (Chill)
I mean my penmanship at times tends to get ill, violence but with skill
That's why I hence when I write ends up with the mic and pencil gettin' killed (Yeah, hold up)
And I'm still ride or die for the squad (Yeah)
So you know which side that I'm on
If a battle line's ever drawn, but if I get involved
It'll be like K9's in a brawl
But not similar to Mike Vick at all
'Cause even if I don't have a dog in the fight
They ain't never gonna get rid of the fight in the dog
Got stripes like a tiger, so you might get mauled, a mic in the palms
Like claws, I can swing right for your jaw and rip it off with one swipe of the paw
Bitch, you still on my dick or naw? (Naw)
If I suck, your wife is a straw (Straw)
I'm sick and I'm not gonna cover my mouth next time that I cough 'cause

They say these bars are like COVID (Bars are like COVID)
You get 'em right off the bat (You get 'em right off the bat)
Infected with SARS and Corona (Infected with SARS and Corona)
Like you took a bite off of that (Damn)
And it goes from martian to human (Yeah)
That's how the virus attacks (That's how the virus attacks)
They come at me with machine guns (Brr)
Like trying to fight off a gnat (Yeah, yeah)

And d.a. got that dope he sends to me (Uh-huh)
It's like pneumonia symptoms and contracting COVID instantly
Which is what separates my flow from theirs, so that no one gets even close to this to pose a risk to me
So vocalistically (What?), that's social distancing (Yeah)
Flow going viral, you best stay strapped
With that Lysol and get way back
Get that Pine-Sol and that Ajax
'Cause this dry cough is just like football umpires callin' a playback
Bitch, back the # up like fifteen yards, these rhymes call for a face mask (Face mask)
'Nother fourteen-day quarantine, they're cordoning off everything
This # lookin' like a horror scene, like me metaphorically (Damn)
'Cause them stay-at-home orders seem like they just keep getting more extreme
Who knows when this nightmare will end (Marilyn)? Like Monroe, Norma Jean
Still got that heroin lyrical drip with that morphine and that Thorazine
'Cause I'm so #in' dope (Dope) and you're a fiend
And that's the one thing that hasn't changed (Nope), for some semblance of normalcy
But I might need that Hydrochloroquine 'cause I got that (Yeah)
The Dark Horse, I'm a knight-mare
Mom fed me Valium like air
Thought that's why they called it a high chair (Woah)
I got a contact like eyewear
Woah, wait a minute, bitch, let me lie here
20/20 hindsight in my side mirror
Every year, you drop the ball like Times Square
My hair trigger whenever I get an idea
#, now my name rings out like a sponge mop
And my drip was a drop
In the bucket, so that gun shot
You just heard just now in that one spot
Just came from the nine mil' that I just got
That's big bucks and I got a full money clip and I'm loaded
I ain't even mean to go the # off
I'm still totally inappropriate with an opiate
Groping it while I'm holding it like a trophy
I'm hoping a little codeine'll get me OD'in'
Woah, everything is slow, I begin to floating
I know that I'm getting loaded, the pen exploded
Hiroshima with the flows, a utopia
With the dope, I'm an OG, I'm like the G.O.A.T.
Here to get your goat little bit of sodium, it's assault (A salt)
When I'm at the podium, at your throat, holy camoly
I'm in the zone with the # I'm on
Get Imodium and a commode because nobody's even close
You're petroleum to plutonium, you're a phony
I'm at the crib with your ho, got her at the pole like voting with no clothing
Stripped down to a toe ring and here we go with the gloating
I've got my nose in the air like a Boeing
Then I got into a little bit of an argument with her
So I took a little lick of a Klonopin at dinner
Then I hit her with the mother#ing ottoman and bit her
Then I shot her in the liver, delivered her to the bottom of the river
But I'm probably gon' jump in the water with her
With a wad of money 'cause I got a lot of it
And when it come to drippin', I be soppin' like a hundred mile an hour
Never runnin' out of either one of 'em, I gotta get it 'cause

They say these bars are like COVID (Bars are like COVID)
You get 'em right off the bat (You get 'em right off the bat)
Infected with SARS and Corona (Infected with SARS and Corona)
Like you took a bite off of that (Damn)
And it goes from martian to human (Yeah)
That's how the virus attacks (That's how the virus attacks)
They come at me with machine guns (Brr)
It's like trying to fight off a gnat (Fight off a gnat)

Eminem is definitely one of the greats but I like MF Doom better.

I don't think he tops Genius from the Wu Tang Clan either. The Genius is/was one of the most underrated rappers ever.

Eminem's got good albums and less good albums. The eminem show is probably my favourite. It's got some great political tracks, some real bleak depressing stuff, some heartfelt stuff that comes straight from the soul and some stuff that's just fun. His later stuff I find is hit or miss. I dunno, it's just not the same without the aggressive youthful anger. His newer stuff lacks the genuine rage and anger of his earlier albums, but his skills seem to have gotten better as the years go on. Sometimes though I find his songs have the same feeling as watching some super good guitar player showing off shredding, especially the newer ones, sure they're super awesome and technical and all, but sometimes, you just wanna hear a song, you don't wanna hear someone wanking their instrument all over the place.

MF Doom is Ph.D level hip hop. I love Doom. He is in my Top 5. Just sheer brilliance but I think he is too dense lyrically for most people. I can't tell you how many hours I've wasted watching breakdowns of his rhyme schemes.

Crayola can't keep up with Doom...

Like most guys, he has matured. I mean he is almost 50! I don't think he has that youthful rage in him anymore. He seems to be in a good place mentally and focusing on honing his craft. The technical parts of rhyming.

I like seeing some of the older guys showing they still got it.

Method Man's verse on Conway's Lemon was epic.

Yeah, Genius is great. I tend to favor Raekwon. His verse Ghostface's Daytona 500 to me is one of the best of all time imho. He just spazzed out.

I will say my favorite Gza bar is when he says "Lyrics is weak like clock radio speakers..."

I love when MCs pick up on some obscure sh*t we all know but don't really think about and puts it in a bar in a clever way that you can instantly recognize.

Mf Doom said "Tilted like that fat man shoe..." LMFAO.

Yeah, Raekwon is great too; a lot of the WuTang are great but I think GZA is the best with bars. Check out his verse on a Rapsody song, which, Rapsody is another great but I'm not sure she's better than Eminem.

I love when the Genius says: "Quietly whispering is a world of Wiki-leakers...."

Pure gold! LOL

Doom is definitely next level HipHop. No one even comes close but there are some other good rappers in their own ways of rhyming.

Top 5 rappers of all time:

Dylan

Dylan

Dylan Dylan and Dylan.

Because he spits hot fire.

I found M&Ms to be cool at first but after awhile the angry kid from the trailer park vibe got tiring.

There are other artists with better voices for the genre that I prefer.

Rakim
Killer Mike
Del tha Funky Homosapien

For a long time rap got materialistic and gangsta, I long for the fun loving positive songs of yesteryear.

Songs like Cool like dat, T.R.O.Y. and Tennessee.

Ooh, also Outkast!

I remember back in the day when Em was on Westwood with D12, he said "If I'm still doing this when I'm 40, just kill me ".

I'm paraphrasing but 47 years old and he's still going, lol.

GOAT? Quite possibly but I kinda lost interest in his music when he got sober. I started to find his music a little depressing.

There have been so many incredible rappers over the decades that didn't get half the attention Em did so I kind of feel bad saying that he is the GOAT.

It also saddens me that some of them died after a relatively short career and where they would be now if they weren't taken so young.
