Did anyone else get an invitation to be a Beta Tester for StarLink?
Kind of a Weird Name, but whatever.

The timing could be better because it’s so close to Christmas.
I suspect the price tag may be a Bit much for a lot of people right now.
But hell, let’s do it!

Here is the email I received:

“This is your official invitation to participate in Starlink's Better Than Nothing Beta program!

Expect data speeds to vary from 50Mb/s to 150Mb/s and latency from 20ms to 40ms over the next several months. There will also be brief periods of no connectivity at all.

As we launch more satellites, install more ground stations and improve our networking software, data speed, latency and uptime will improve dramatically. For latency, we expect to achieve 16ms to 19ms by summer 2021.

The Starlink phased-array user terminal, which is more advanced than what’s in fighter jets, plus mounting tripod and wifi router, costs CA$649 and the monthly subscription costs CA$129.”

My vacation starts tomorrow at 6 pm.
I booked a month off from work and I have zero plans.
Well it’s my 10 year wedding anniversary on dec 17th. Then of course Christmas.
But other than that, since COVID, I just planned on lazing around the house with the Wife and kids While their on Xmas break, and playing Cyberpunk for the next month.
I’m actually really looking forward to taking the break.

So, I’m submitting my payment tomorrow when I get home and will hopefully be rolling with StarLink shortly.
I’ll let you all know how it is.

A little spendy.

But i seem to recall saying you're out there.

Even with me paying $168 U.S. dollars per month with Verizon internet, phone and cable tv (I really don't watch tv) it takes at least 3 hours to install an update for (ex) Just Cause 4... then another 2 hours to instal the upload. Made gaming pretty much not worth turning on that console anymore. I bought a switch😞

Happy anniversary

I really hope it is a success.

Rural customers have little choice. I currently use fixed wireless and it is bad.

Nice 1
You will get the cool router thing with the dish that auto aligns with the satts,I was watching an unboxing vid about it:

You can see the dish move at 1:40ish,although he doesn't get a great shot of movement.
But I guess it will move about as it switches strings of sattelites.
Pretty cool, and faster than my poxy home connection.

The thing I like about it is its light enough to put in a backpack,so you could go trekking and set it up when you camp in the evening for fast internet anywhere eventually.

I thought that was the main perk to this?!

I was actually looking forward to using that excuse.

Thanks BB!
Yeah, I’m currently paying $190 a month for net and house phone, in Northern Ontario.
So in the long run, it will be cheaper
The upfront cost of $806 sucks, but it looks like that’s with tax.

Oh nice!
I just figured it was a static unit.
The contract says it has to stay at my address.
Perhaps that’s because they want to monitor the speeds and connectivity?
But if it’s mobile..
That changes things dramatically!

Signed up but nothing yet.

A third of the monthly price over our currently installed satellite and quite a bit up front.

Makes you wonder if "Dial up" still exist and since no one is using it, would it out speed.

Ahhh I still can hear that AOL sign in.😥

I think its static for now as its still beta, but I think they want it to be portable in the future.
Be interesting to see what speed you get,let us know

So 510.70 USD for the hardware and 101.51 a month for 50Mb/s to 150Mb/s is not bad. Eventhough the latency is high I just might switch to give comCr@p the finger.

Are there any datacaps ?

Definitely keep us posted and on the latency.

I'd take a portable one for camping, or offshore boating.
I wonder if they have the same rain and snow issues as direct tv?
May need a defrost device on it.
Just checked my internet speed. 456 Mbps & Ping 27 not bad.
