LAUSANNE, Switzerland — Breakdancing has been confirmed as an official Olympic sport.

The International Olympic Committee’s pursuit of urban events to lure a younger audience saw street dance battles officially added to the medal events program at the 2024 Paris Games.

I love this! I know it might not be everyone's cup of tea, but nice to see they are trying to draw in a younger crowd.
I think it's great the Olympics has evolved. Can't wait to watch.

I hope all will be well by 2024. The Paris location worries me a little bit as there has been a lot of unrest and terror type of activity there too.

Younger crowd?

Break dancing was a thing when I was a kid in the '80s.

Those dance moves are going to have to get super acrobatic before I can respect this as an olympic sport.

Watch some of the video I posted. It takes some serious strength and control to pull some of that off.

You obviously have not seen current breakdance moves.... they will put the gymnast to shame.

Let me introduce you to B Boy Junior... (what is crazy is he is also lame from polio in one leg, you can tell if you see him walk and how one leg seems disconnected). Check out his upper body strength.

Physics: No one can deny me...

B Boy Junior: Hold my beer...

The format should be like old school break dance battles... greatest dance scene ever.

USA: "Russian Rockers!"

Russians: "Hey yo, there's the USA. Let's serve 'em!"

I dont see a problem. Ballroom dancing is an Olympic sport too. There is more athletic skill in break dancing than there is in ballroom.

Break dancing is practically a martial art.

Word up.

I grew up in the underground in Detroit in the late nineties. Some of the best breaking I have ever seen in my life! We also had our own style called the Jit. These artists are total athletes, this should have been an Olympic sport long ago. Many gymnasts already incorporate a lot of breaking into their sets. This is awesome!

I wouldn't go that far. I'd say the athleticism expresses in different ways.

It's a real bummer that the Tokyo Olympics didn't happen this year. They really got shafted. I was really excited about Goku being their mascot.

I dunno, I think there is enough overlap to really blur whether its a "martial art" or not. After all, we have styles like Capoeira and Tai Chi. Some might dismiss them as non-combat arts, but I think thats more due to modern "takes." And, of course, some historical nuances. I suppose its more academic than anything, but an interesting debate nonetheless.

My perspective is biased on it though. Having participated in both dancing and martial arts at a relatively high level, I found that they made exceptional complements. To the point that they ended up shaping each other and turning into one "thing." At one point, I even wanted to teach it to others, though that seems like several lifetimes ago.

I would strongly suggest anyone looking into that sort of thing to follow forms/katas strictly if starting out though.

As for making breakdancing an olympic sport.. Seems completely appropriate. It takes an extraordinary degree of skill and discipline, just the same as any physical activity like that.

I was responding to the idea that ballroom dancing was somehow lesser. It isn't as blantantly physical, but it does take a degree of athleticism was my point. it's just that the athleticism is expressed in different ways.

Sure. That feels like it needs to go somewhere in there with dressage.

I am not sure exactly what you mean? Flatland BMX and breakdance have a few things in common mainly including a very uncanny self awareness in balance and technical movement. When I was young I used to admire those guys even though I was a dirt and park guy.

I mean in the technical precision needed to reproduce the routine in the circling and in time to the music, even the use of classical. Then you have the rider and bike, rider and horse.

A lot of people think there is no athleticism involved in dressage, but there is in maintaining and holding proper seat. Very seldom do riders settle on saddle part of the ride and communication is in the touch of thigh and degree of pressure in the seat. So they do a lot of the ride suspended in the mounted position, in the stirrups using their thighs. A lot of strength in maintaining that posture and seat and in moving in time to the horse.

In other words, I was paying a compliment. His ride reminded me of a well done dressage.
