For decades there have been debates about the authenticity of "
The Report from Iron Mountain". I will trust most here know what this 'report'
is, and what it is about, so I won't go into much detail about or its contents.
In short the alleged government report, which was later challenged as satire by it's supposed author, Leonard Lewin, stated that the US economy as
well as others of the western world was not sustainable without war. I'm paraphrasing here, so don't get to crazy on me about the exact wording. The
'report' was allegedly a study commissioned by the US government to determine if lasting peace was economically feasible in the absence of war. The
conclusion of the 'report' was that peace was not economically feasible without war. However, it did speculate about other possibilities which might
fit the criteria of creating a common enemy of the people. After much controversy Lewin would ultimately step forward in 1972 and publicly claim the
book was only satire.
The book was originally published by Dial Press in 1967 without any clear claim of authorship other than a forward by Lewin. I'm fast forwarding
through a lot of history here so be nice, I'm just hitting the highlights to illustrate a point. The book was re-released in 1990 by another
publisher without permission. Lewin sued the publisher for copyright infringement and won. So, it seems reasonably safe to say Lewin actually was
the original author.
Okay, so here's where things get interesting. When Lewin made his statement in 1972, he said...(his book) was "
as outrageous, morally and
intellectually" as the "Pentagon Papers" were at the time. This is curious, because as many of us know, the Pentagon Papers (which were fully
declassified in 2011) turned out to be very real indeed. As many here also know, part of the Nixon Watergate scandal involved Nixon directing his
'plumbers' to get dirt on and discredit the man who leaked the Pentagon Papers to the NYT, Daniel Ellsberg. Prior to this the Pentagon Papers had
been propagandized as fantasy and satire, ironically, just like... the Report from Iron Mountain was.
Stay with me here because it gets even better...
Now we're going to rewind a little further. In 1962 John Frankenheimer produced the film
The Manchurian Candidate, starring Frank Sinatra.
The movie was based on the 1959 novel by the same name written by Richard Condon. The film would be mysteriously vanish from circulation in 1963 and
not meaningfully resurface until 1988. Over the years many theories have circulated about the possible connections between the movie and the 1963 JFK
assassination. Even today these theories circulate. Was the movie the trigger? Who knows, but interestingly Frankenheimer was personal friends with
Robert Kennedy, and he even drove him to his acceptance speech the night he was assassinated.
So, what do we make out of all this gobbeldy-gook?
1. The Manchurian Candidate predicts an assassination on the president. Less than a year later the president is assassinated.
2. The Pentagon Papers are alleged to be fake and are ultimately later proven to be absolutely true, and
3. The book Report from Iron Mountain says there needs to be war for a stable economy, and there has been ever since it was written, but it is passed
off as satire.
Now, remember way back at the beginning of this OP where I noted the Report from Iron Mountain left the door open for a couple of real or imagined
"other" possibilities? Well, one of those possibilities was theorized to be that something like an "external menace" (i.e. 'Aliens' /
Extra-terrestrials) could take the place of a war to create a common enemy. Some others were:
- A threat of global environmental concern which affects the overall well being of all society, and...
- A health epidemic of such proportion that mankind's survival could be impacted.
And what do we have before us?
1. War
2. Global Warming
3. COVID-19
How long before we find out the Report from Iron Mountain was real after all?
Something to consider.
The End.
