That THE
author and illustrator of all beauty
seen and unseen,
might hear the petition
Of an insignificant such as myself
Beggars belief
Yet according to faith you still bend your ear
Dear Father
When I lift the veil
For a glimpse of the world as you intended it,
not through subjectivity and judgement
But the wider lens,
reality transcends language.
The expanse leaves one speechless,
bigger than the body we borrow--
Bigger than everything--
The sum of our selves
immeasurably greater than the vessel alone,
this instrument through which we detect, record
And even affect Creation.
Heavenly Father, guide my steps that my effect
Be lighter, that when I must put your will
before mine and quiet my interests, I will,
That in times of trouble I reach outwards rather than upwards
That ambitions be set aside when dire times demand
That, in our powerlessness to change our course
We find strength and unprecedented force
To adhere to the radical and yet simple demand:
Love God with all our heart,
And love our neighbors as we love ourselves.
Blessed with riches of which I am hardly aware,
More now than ever, perplexingly now when stripped bare
Of the illusion of security
Each loss but a gain of immeasurable value
And a drawing closer to You
and to the heart of truth.
May we use the heat and pressure of this time to forge this earth,
Our hearth, to make it more hospitable for our brothers,
And that the warmth of our forge draws in children from the cold.
In our minds and deeds the power of heaven
But also of hell;
I pray in times of strife to use them well.
Amen
