This is not drift, rather a comparison to the 1980s

There was this pyramid scheme blew through my area. At first everyone was thrilled for the free money to be made in the game, this went on for about two weeks with hundreds of thousands in cash being handed up the line to those who managed to get in near the beginning.

But once it was nearing it's end and people were catching on to what was happening they began to display more caution. That is when those who were on the tail end of the scheme began to go to outlandish modifications to the original plan so as to scoop up what remaining cash they could find before the pool of suckers dried up completely.
