From Vindolanda fort on Hadrian's Wall. Archeologists have discovered a huge amount of writing tablets dumped in a ditch (over 300). Because of the soil, etc, they are extremely well preserved and can be read. And the best thing is that they are not military communiques or other writings of the rich and famous - instead they are from the soldiers, merchants, locals, etc. They cover things from complaints about late shipments, non payments, etc to invitations for Birthday parties, etc.

There's loads in the garage just assumed they were yours

Back in the day was temping in Telford at siemens on a pre production line for XK8 plastic moulded inlet manifold, they couldn't get it right but was probably quite revolutionary at the time not being made from metals. Irish guy walks in tells us we have served our useage and paid the whole line til dinnertime and showed us the door. Must be quarter century ago

Hiya mate, yes i saw the Jet Packs for Mountain Rescue. Very impressive, particularly as we know how long it actually takes to walk up those seemingly small dales and hills!

I'd still be around hedge height though. I like to think my fellow Brits would be similar! It would be like a Monty Python sketch, only in reality.....

Never been there but know where you are coming from on the muscle cars being good for their roads, they have them big wide straightees that you can floor it without worrying about the handling.

Wish we could fling our cars about still over here too but I just can't belive what happened to our roads the past few years, it; sreal dangerous in Staffs there's pot holes everywhere even in the city even just down the road the 19thC cobbles are now visible
There seems raodworkd=s everywhere dunno what they are doing but they aint fillin the pot holes

The flingabout yeah, maybe a Pug 205 1.9 retrofitted with electric engines

Maybe you should do what they've started doing in North Attleboro, MA. Potholes Filled With Tiny Christmas Trees In North Attleboro

NORTH ATTLEBORO (CBS) – We are still more than two weeks away from Thanksgiving, but someone is in the Christmas mood in North Attleboro.

A few potholes on Route 1 at the Fashion Crossing Plaza entrance were filled with tiny Christmas trees.

Someone filled in potholes in North Attleboro with small Christmas trees Monday.

One person replied “Funny and cute but not helpful.”

“While the placement of the small tree is amusing (though it is a bit early for decorating), residents should understand that placing obstructions within the roadway could be dangerous and cause damage to vehicles and possible accidents with the persons creating the hazard would be responsible for,” Public Works Director Mark Hollowell told WBZ-TV in an email.

The UK approach tends to be more....entertaining (childish!). Councils don't like to fill them in as it takes away from the rest of the budget. So some enterprising individuals figured out that if you draw giant genitalia around the pot holes then the councils have to do something as it becomes an obscenity!

Mine is one of the very last XK8's off the Jaguar production line. It was built at the same factory that made our Spitfires. So as a homage to the Spitfire the dashboard is in the same shape as the wings

Hopefully this will bring more scrutiny on the EV market. Right now they're mostly catering for up market vehicles like the Tesla, where they can court high profile clients who want to feel good about themselves, and are ignoring the ordinary everyday people who just want to pick up groceries and drop their kids off at school.

I'd get an EV in a heartbeat if they made a small no-frills town car for running around local roads. But I'm not a profitable enough demographic so they don't make anything that would be of use to me.

That's because right now, the only people who can afford them and for whom they are at all practical is that market. They cost too much for what they do.

How strange as older cars generally pollute more than newer cars - so weird to only ban new cars but allow for old cars to be sold then?! I can imagine that it´ll be like Cuba with tons of old gas and diesel cars that people keep repairing.

It's evidently a compomise to soften the financial impact on those who have got cars already. Otherwise it would feel like confiscation.
(I've never owned a car, so I don't have an interest there)

Call it what you want: vegetation frustration, a plant-based protest, or a sinkhole salad; but a tomato garden growing in a large concrete cavity in the middle of the road at Poplar Plains Crescent is getting a lot of attention.

And residents say it’s about time.

“The sinkhole has been here for many months,” said Samantha Steeves, who lives along the same street.

Things don’t happen very fast here either, they waited so long to fix the pothole/sinkhole, they had to wait for the tomatoes to ripen...

The downside is that they aren't really any more green than gas.

There is upside to electric/battery, it's getting better and only a matter of time.

They emit less greenhouse gases and air pollutants over their life than a petrol or diesel car. This is even after the production of the vehicle and the generation of the electricity required to fuel them is considered.

Reusing and recycling batteries is also a growing market. Research into the use of second-hand batteries is looking at ways to reuse batteries in new technologies such as electricity storage. One day we could all have batteries in our homes being used to store our own energy. Opportunities like this will reduce the lifetime environmental impact of battery manufacture.

Even after taking battery manufacture into account, electric cars are still a greener option. This is due to the reduction in emissions created over the car’s lifetime.

Great points in this article and it's pro-green cars, but it shows we aren't there yet. Pretty much right now it's just feel-good
legislation, now producing a green car is twice the carbon footprint of a petrol/gasoline car, it's only until it's used and used a lot that it shrinks that value and even then there are some caveats to that as well like how clean is the electricity produced where the car is See the article.. 60% of the cobalt needed for batteries in from Congo, that's more than oil was in its heyday in Saudi Arabia. Unless tech can do better get ready for cobalt wars in Africa, why do you think China is up to its knees in Africa

If you want people to switch modes of transportation you had better come up with a better horse and buggy.

www.weforum.org...

At the COP23 climate meeting, electric shuttles moved delegates across town, showcasing sustainable energy and green technology. But for farmer Zhang Tuling, green technology means dusty air and stunted crops.

Mr Zhang lives near a large mine in northern China that extracts a key ingredient for batteries: natural graphite. He can testify to the hidden social and environmental toll of lithium-ion batteries - the very devices that enable renewable energy storage solutions, electric vehicles and mobile power.

Firstly, producing an electric vehicle contributes, on average, twice as much to global warming potential and uses double the amount of energy than producing a combustion engine car. This is mainly because of its battery. Battery production uses a lot of energy, from the extraction of raw materials to the electricity consumed in manufacture. The bigger the electric car and its range, the more battery cells are needed to power it, and consequently the more carbon produced.

Secondly, once in use, an electric vehicle is only as green as the electricity that feeds its battery. A coal-powered battery is dirtier than a solar-powered battery. Governments can help by speeding up their transition to greener energy.

Thirdly, while an electric vehicle has a higher carbon footprint at the beginning of its lifecycle, it is typically cleaner once in use. Over time, it can catch up on the combustion engine car. The point at which an electric vehicle’s lifetime emissions break even with a combustion engine car also depends on the car’s mileage.

Pollution beyond carbon emissions
Battery production causes more environmental damage than carbon emissions alone. Consider dust, fumes, wastewater and other environmental impacts from cobalt mining in the Democratic Republic of the Congo; water shortages and toxic spills from lithium mining in Latin America, which can alter ecosystems and hurt local communities; a heavily polluted river due to nickel mining in Russia; or air pollution in northeastern China, as mentioned above.

There isn’t a ban as you will still be able to drive older cars and new hybrids.

Quite right, no ban - only on new cars.

It was a matter of "when" and not "if" so at least a date has been set.

Just hope the UK can take a lead in some of this new technology AND sort out the fact that not all of us live in London and cities. Currently, electric cars where I live are pointless. No recharging stations and (to be honest) a diesel is better for these rural roads, if not a four wheel drive!

a reply to: angelchemuel Sounds like a nice motor, can't imagine ever wanting to let a car like that go. Never really looked into the Jags but do like the XK lines also the XJ's too from around late 90's or 2000 especially in blue. Brother in law had a 3ltr gold X-Type, when he married my sister, maybe around around twelve years ago. Hey Angel he was at Cheltenham Uni too but the late eighties! That was just a coincidence but it's a small world. Maybe you know a guy called Scot from Wolverhampton. But it's a long time to remember

There was a chap on the radio recently who was pushing sunflower oil if memory serves correctly as the perfect alternative to fossils. To be precise he was pushing used chip fat he coaxed chippy people into giving him the waste and recommended sunflower oil as the perfect environmental solution.

We can use our existing technology / current mechanical set up to use the oil, no power generation needed. It's only a question of getting used to the smells
