Consider this.

A wheel without the central rods would surely crush under the weight of its carriage.

In contrast, a cross would make an ill-designed wheel, for those carried would be in for a rough ride!

Consider how the cross layed within the circle forms the wheel, which drives you forward.

It's a circle.

Ovals are more wiggly and comic.

Are you suggesting a wheel needs a cross to work?

I think you need more spokes otherwise the wheel would deform eventually and you would be travelling on squares.

I'm worried you're using this as a religious message so if that's the case I think the star of David would probably give you the smoothest ride.

But why a cross and not the usual spokes?

Spokes work for sure.

Ahhhhhhh,

the perfect chance to recite my favourite piece of navel gazing:

"It is my belief that history is a wheel"

"Inconstancy is my very essence", says the wheel. "Rise up on my spokes if you like, but do not complain when you are cast back down into the depths".

"Good times pass, but then so do the bad. Mutability is our tragedy, but it is also our hope".

"The worst of time, like the best, are always passing away".

Or, in Layman's terms, there'll be another bus in a minute.

It is also very regular at the same time. The wheel spoke up and down motion paints a sinusoidal wave that is very consistent over time.

I'm not saying astrology works, but an astrological wheel needs mentioning in philosophical debate:-

Okay. That's 12 spokes.
Beats the 8 spoke wheels I was thinking of.

Looking at sport and racing rims everything above 5 should be enough spokes. I think earlier wheels might have had a even number of spokes to make it easier to build them.

Back then they were made from wood or with steel collars on the road touching surface. I know them from our yearly fests where old horse wagons and slides were polished up and used regular.

They had more spokes than 8 or 9, maybe as much as 12. Sure it depends on the location, craftsmen and time period.

When I was in third grade there was a girl in my class who came from Wisconsin in a covered wagon. She lived next door to the house I was born in.

Now that I think about it, that wagon may have actually ... I sort of remember rubber tires; no spokes.

This is a scaled down children's version.
But if you picture a full sized - 5 person capacity. That would be it.
Pulled by two big draft horses.
One went lame around Las Vegas.
A truck pulled the wagon from there.

The girl told me these things in fourth grade.
In fifth grade I held her hand at a roller rink.
She said my hand was sweaty.

Amazing what happens when you consider the wheel.

wheels should ideally be round. spokes reduce the weight, maybe better than a solid cross section of a tree.

Amazing what happens when you consider the wheel.

When I hear the sentence "no need to reinvent the wheel" I always remembered the school lesson in second grade, from the teacher that always was so picky on beautiful lettering, that the wheel was one of the most boosting invention and has been reinvented a lot.

Just look at the progression and the new airless wheels coming out. That sentence always had a foul taste for me since the wheel is reinvented and adapted constantly everywhere to different situations. Bearings, street wheels, turbos et cetera et cetera

How curious then, that the Wheel of Modern Man contains no Cross, and it's once shiny reflective exterior has now been turned into an opaque, maniable, black surface.

I sometimes find myself lost in thoughts as I Dream of all the aspects of Rubber.

I can't think about rubber at the moment.

“I consider that a man's brain originally is like a little empty attic, and you have to stock it with such furniture as you choose. A fool takes in all the lumber of every sort that he comes across, so that the knowledge which might be useful to him gets crowded out, or at best is jumbled up with a lot of other things, so that he has a difficulty in laying his hands upon it. Now the skillful workman is very careful indeed as to what he takes into his brain-attic. He will have nothing but the tools which may help him in doing his work, but of these he has a large assortment, and all in the most perfect order. It is a mistake to think that that little room has elastic walls and can distend to any extent. Depend upon it there comes a time when for every addition of knowledge you forget something that you knew before. It is of the highest importance, therefore, not to have useless facts elbowing out the useful ones.”
― Arthur Conan Doyle, A Study in Scarlet

That was after Dr. Watson asked Holmes if it would make any difference to him whether the Sun circled Earth or the Earth circled the Sun.

Wheels and crosses.

There's a Chi Rho wheel with 8 spokes, like the 8 spokes on the Dharma Wheel, which looks like a mariner's wheel( maniable ).

It has been said that Chiron placed the Centaurus and Sagittarius constellations in the Sky as a guide for Jason's maritime journey.

This is the Constellation Centaurus.
Notice the Southern Cross between the front legs and the back legs.

All of life is a wheel with spokes... for me anyway.

Even looks like a wheel meant to navigate through the experience of life and the cosmic order of things. Dharma can also be seen as "The phenomenal". (Def 2)

Actually Tool wrote a great song about it:

Such a wonderful Image, you Bless my Heart, Truly!

See how the "Ying/Yang" has given way to a representation of the Three Kingdoms, flowing into One Another.

Look upon the Golden Circles contained within One Another.

Witness how the spokes Radiate outwards as a Sun!

Interesting topic! I wonder why no creature in nature evolved a wheel (as part of their physique)
