We used to use various flash chat services as our hosting provider did not permit us to host an irc server.
As far as the current situation? I'll be totally honest with you... I'm doing this strictly so people can stay in touch with each other just in case
that becomes necessary. It's not a perfect solution by any means, but it is the most user friendly one I was able to find and it's free. Can't
really beat that.
As far as IRC goes... yeah I used to use that a very very long time ago. I don't want the responsibility of creating my own and I don't trust putting
our users on another network like dalnet etc. I also don't want anyone's info. At all. I don't want anyone to worry about who's looking up their IP
address, I don't have time to deal with setting up the client to deal with vhosts. I haven't been on irc in the current century and I don't know how
to make it functional and preserve everyone's privacy. I guess I've aged out.
Frankly, this is just the easiest way to accomplish my goal.
