I am only good at finding morels but still know what false ones look like.

That's one of the few I'm 100% comfortable foraging.

There are too many stories of mushroom experts ending up sick or dead, ...

....or getting high in the middle of the forest. I could end up posting a shamanic experience video

They have a small window to grow, as any cook knows, its a bit of a delicacy to have and work with.

Once they're done here my guy has them flown in from California, they seem to have almost a 2 month season.

We get chanterelles out the wazoo here in GA. Me and a buddy typically harvest about 4 lbs each when we go camping or to one of the lakes we hang at. Can't get enough of those!

Ahabstar’s Universal Guide to Mushrooms:

In a survival situation it is either short term or long term. You do not have to eat anything in a Short term situation as it takes about 21 days on average to actually die of hunger. In a long term situation, you never want to do anything to make your situation worse.

With that in mind, just as all guns are to be considered loaded at all times so too should all mushrooms thought to be poisonous. Far easier to identify other wild edibles than to gamble on your situation.

That said, if you want to learn mushrooms then do so by all means. But learn from an expert that can show you the differences between good and bad look alike varieties. Keep in mind that even a mycologist can miss a false morel if they only see the stem after they have been washed and cut up before the breading process.

About a year ago, I was exploring the forest just before winter. Weather was so nice, not too hot. Today I remembered those pics while I was eating my shiitake soup. I love mushrooms but no clue how to ID wild ones. Do you ?

I'm sure nobody in that area has interest in this kind of things, I also found some medicinal plants (lost that photo) in this place and nobody harvest them.

Gotta love that vivid color on that one, no clue if edible but certainly beautiful. Could it be a sort of flower and not a mushroom ?

Wild mushrooms can be incredibly dangerous. Edible ones can closely resemble highly poisonous one. Get a good guide, learn to take spore prints and consult with someone knowledgeable before you eat any wild mushrooms period.

Don't worry brother, I won't try them if not sure.

Even if mushrooms are like chocolate for me.

Just sent an email to the expert recommended by Augustus. I bought delicious black trumpets from him one time. Not cheap but amazing flavor.

I made an unforgettable rice with them.

You can also visit shroomery.org for ID help. There’s more than just psychonauts on there.

The first pictures remind me of a mushroom I found growing on a mulched area in New England right around Oct/Nov. They only came out during that time, assuming as the night’s cool air hit the warm ground and created enough moisture content and temperature conditions.

Yes. He has a good variety of mushrooms.

Oh, by the way...., I went to Rosario's in Montclair last week for the guanciale. You were right. Also the nduja and the homemade sausages are first class.

The man is a god, his pork products are amazing. The only other nduja that compares is the one I get at the Arthur Ave shop in the Bronx.

Did you make the carbonara?

Your description of the weather when you found them matches with the weather the day I found those ones too, just before cold weather season.

Oh yeah !

Guanciale cooking :

I run out of pecorino, so I improvised with some leftover fresh cheese
My daughter also had some gnocchi in the fridge waiting for someone to cook them, so I used them. Hate to waste food.

Looks similar but chantarelles don't grow on trees.
